Hi,

I am in NJ and have a permit I need to use. I have 3 handguns...a S&W M&P 22, S&W M&P 9mm full size and a Ruger GP100 .357 revolver. Since I have a .22, a 9mm and a .357 revolver, should I go for a 45ACP for diversity or another 9mm?
Maybe a Glock 17 (Glock 19 grip is too short for my hand).

I am open for suggestions! I also am a lefty shooter.

Thanks
Mike in NJ

Go to a gun store and try as many .45's as they have, at least the grip and balance. Try the 1911's, there are a bunch of different manufacturers and many handle very differently.

If you don't like those, try the Sig, S&W, Beretta, CZ, Ruger and any other 9mm's they may have. LOTS of 9mm choices, but it needs to fit your hand and budget.

Good luck!

(or just move to Texas and don't worry about the permit) :)

If you don't mind keeping up with different ammo, then get the Glock 41, 45 ACP. Another 9 mm to consider is the Glock 34. You might as well get the MOS for a reflex sight. Hahahahahaha

Get both 9 mm and 45 ACP. It's inevitable.

Walter PPQ in 9 or 45, or maybe a VP9. I have seen very few people who have been unhappy with any of these guns, including me.

I vote diversity, get the .45acp. To take that a bit further and .45acp demands a 1911. Just my opinion and you get what you paid for it...:D

I'd say look at some .45 acp pistols or even some 10mm ones as well. Lots of fun and performance to be had with the larger cartridges. 1911's and glocks come to mind.

If you own & use a Glock 17 in New Jersey, you will be limited to 10 round factory mags, 17 rd. mags are illegal in the state, same situation in CO.

A Gen4 Glock 21 in .45ACP might be a good way to go

yes

Berg,

Yes, I am aware of the NJ laws and 15 round magazine limit. Any clue why Glock has never offered a 15 round magazine for the Glock 17??

Also, .45ACP's, just by watching a ton of You Tube videos of guys shooting, doesn't seem very fun. Looks like it will wear you out rather quickly. Looks more like a chore rather than fun like softer 9mm.

Yes, .45acp does kick a little more than a 9mm, but if you go with an all steel 1911 it isn't as bad as you might think.

Sounds like it's time for a 1911.

Someone else with big hands. My 19 is almost a 2 finger grip for me. (Yeah, I probably should have gotten the 17, back when.)

ten round limit, euuu. I remember seeing a pic on a different forum, of someone in California (same limit) who'd done a grip chop on a 19 so he could use glock 26 mags. Consensus there was that the factory 10 rounders weren't reliable.

Illinois sucks, but not that bad. Yet.

Since you have magazine limits, and (IIRC) can't use hollow points, get a 1911 in .45.

They do, for Canada. When El Al Security went to Glock 17s, they sent them from Israel, minus magazines! They had sent their Browning Hi-Powers, back, on the plane, that brought the Glock's!

I used some contacts at Glock GA, to get them gifted?
Glock 10 round magazines. Could not jump the queue to buy them, first come, first served, by date.

So came as gift? Cheque sent to Sports Foundation, a gift also? Everybody happy.

The first 10 round magazines? Were crap. Now OK?

Can you recommend a steel 1911 .45ACP in the 500-600 dollar range?

I've been real happy with my Rock Island, once the slide stop issue was resolved. $400, a couple years ago. If you're a lefty you'd probably want to step up the the "Tactical" model with ambi safety.

We have the same 15rd mag limit here in CO, I moved here from PA last year and my G-17 and the 17rd. mags I had were legally shipped here by an FFL, and are legal to own and use here, but I can't sell the gun with these mags, and I don't want to anyway.

But in NJ, 17 round mags are illegal to own & use, I could provide you with a link to a company that sells blocked 15 rd, mags for the G-17 & 34, but I'm pretty sure that blocked mags that can be disassembled are illegal in NJ, and I would never recommend permanently blocked mags for any reason or purpose.

Glock 21! :D

If you already own and shoot a .357 revolver you should find a .45acp a piece of cake.

I'll probably get crucified by the 1911 purists, but you can get a Taurus 1911 in the $475 - $550 range, depending on what finish you want. I have seen many good reviews on them, and very few bad ones. They come standard with an ambidextrous safety, as well.

oh

mdayben,

Yes, I do own and shoot my Ruger GP100, but ONLY .38 Special rounds! I have no desire to shot .357 rounds, too loud and a chore. NOT fun.
