Looking to spend 300

Just got home from the gun show and he did pick up the aforementioned sw9ve. And yes I am doing my best to pass on as much info as possible. He is an intelligent and capable person and we are about to go do some firing.

Revolver or semiauto

Thats the first decision he has to make. He should go with the one he is more comfortable with. The Ruger P95 is very reliable, mine has never malfunctioned since I bought it four years ago. As for a revolver Taurus is a good option. Both can be found in his price range.

What do you need to know about basic safety that costs 300$ to learn?

You didn't read my post properly. I said 'some' of the $300.

Look, many new shooters don't know about finger off the trigger, sweeping, always loaded, state/federal laws, shoot/no shoot times, safety equipment useage (see this a LOT) etc etc. Unless someone shows them the ropes, a safety class is high priority.

A beginners hand gun is always a topic of great debate. A nice used .357 mag revolver or a used S&W 3rd generation 9mm or similar could easily be had at this price point. No Glocks for beginners, nice long heavy triggers are in order.

Tell him to go to a range and spend a hundred of those dollars on getting some gun experience.

Then save up some money for the gun he really wants.

I bought a used Ruger P95 for $225 at a gunstore and love the gun but he might not.

He really needs to save more money if he hopes to have a choice of the guns he wants.

The market for handguns has gone crazy in the last six months and the prices have gone up a hundred and fifty dollars in some cases for quality handguns new and used.

Heck, just three months ago,you could buy used Sig's in great used shape from internet sights for $245 but wave bye bye to those kinds of deals.

Now you might get a Sig that looks like someone stood on it to stop a car for anywhere close to that price.

For a first time buyer, always get a new semi auto or a very good condition used revolver. A used semi auto is going to need repair much sooner than a new semi. For $265, you can get a SCCY 9 mm. Very simple design. Nice clear sights, DOA, which is better for a beginner to learn proper technique.

Verti,
Read your reply. The S&W Sigma is a nice gun. I picked up a "Like New" (after I cleaned the former owners powder) used one last month for $250.
It's a nice handgun.

Another vote for the ruger! my first gun was a full size P89 (9mm) and i love it, rugged, super reliable, and feels good/balanced in the hand. Also i really like that it has a metal frame, i just cant get into the polymer guns. My vote is for a P89 (9mm) or a P90 (.45acp) if he wants a full size gun or a P93 or P94 if he wants something more compact. In my opinion they are the best guns for the money. Maybe its just cause its my first gun but after having shot numerous glocks, berettas, sigs, and even a couple HKs, i will always favor my trusty P89.
