Looking for Sugestions for My First 1911

teca99,

In your original post you state that you can't shell out more than $1000, but want room for customization.

For just under $1000 you can probably take your pick (get one that has everything you want or get a basic model and add everything you want).

You can get one of the Kimbers or the Springfields that has all the features you want, or you can buy a "mil-spec" and add parts as you like. If you buy a good brand, it should last a long, long time.

I guess what I'm trying to say is for the money you are willing to spend you wouldn't need to leave room for customization (unless you want real fancy), you could just buy everything you want right off the bat. If you do want to tinker and add parts, you can just get a mil-spec.

The word "Custom" as you are probably seeing it (Kimbers) doesn't mean the gun isn't mass produced. Kimber named their guns Custom because when they initially started producing 1911s they had features normally associated with customized 1911s.

You really could do well with a Kimber or a Springfield.

I like my S/S Springfield 1911 Loaded V12. I only put 300 rounds through it, but not a single failure so far. If you don't like ported barrels then go with the standard Loaded 1911. Finish is your choice. Blued finish is cheaper, but if you can afford stainless, it is alot nicer looking on a 1911.
I hear good and bad with the aluminum models. I stay away from them myself.

I'd say get a new Colt Government Model. The ones I've seen are around $500.

Other good choices: Kimber Custom, Springfield Armory Loaded. You can sometimes also find good deals on older Colts.

I ordered a Sistema from Cruffler.com at the beginning of September and got it about a month later. I just took it out to the range today for the first time band put 125 rounds through it (100 230g Blazers, 25 230g Rem Golden Sabers). The gun cost $300 (+FFL fees etc.) but I put some tweaking work into it: beavertail safety grip, feed ramp, trigger job. Anyway, my first outing was very satisfactory. No jams or miscues of any kind and accuracy better than my Glocks (which I like very much). I wanted a basic 1911 I could customize and this seems a good alternative to a new entry-level Springfield, Colt, or Kimber. There's somethng about a classic old GI .45 (albeit tweaked) that warms the heart.

I have the Springfield Armory Loaded, couldn't be happier. It seems to be a little quicker and a little more accurate than my others for me. BTW this pistol is failure free at this point. If you don't have a 1911 you are really missing something.
Have a nice evening. Rabon...

No advice, just a suggestion like you asked for

Unless you are wanting a project gun I suggest you get a Kimber. If you want a project gun go with a Colt or Springfield. I've never shot a bad Kimber but I hear there are some out there. If you draw the short straw and get a bad one just sell it and try again. Judging from the ration of satisfied Kimber owners and non-satisfied Kimber owners, you will probably get a good one. I've yet to shoot a bad one.

My .02 suggestion would be to at least give the Kimbers a try. My first 1911 was a Kimber CDP Pro Carry and I am very pleased with it. I will certainly add more Kimbers to my collection.

Oooooooooo-kay. I ordered mine in August, waited until one week past expected delivery date, called them, and have been getting the royal run-around ever since. Maybe I'm a little off on my dates, but if so its not by much.

I just walked into my favorite gunstore, bought my Charles Daly and went home.:p :D

Hope that Systema shows up soon for you.
