Looking for Rifle Suggestions

Go with the CZ if a bolt action is what you want. My CZ 455 .17HMR is amazingly smooth and accurate. I'm sure the .22 versions are the same.

Can say the same about a Henry if you want a lever gun. My .17HMR Golden Boy is the smoothest action lever action I've ever handled. And it is very, very accurate.

Won't be disappointed with either a Henry or CZ.

Thank you for the feedback on both models. The more I hear about these, the more certain I'm going with one of them if I buy new.

I don't know that you would find one in your price range- or even if a used rifle interests you, but have you looked into the Marlin 39A's?

I don't know, even used 39A's seem to go for a premium from what I gather. That said, I will not turn my nose up at a good used deal (see above where I wrote about when I went out to buy a new Ruger single-six, but came home with a 23 year old Ruger SP101 instead, lol). I'm going to keep my eye on the used racks for sure.

And, that folks, is why it's always good to go handle a firearm in person.

Stopped by a LGS today on the way home from work to see what they had in stock. The used rack was dismal, but they did have a large stock of brand new Henry rifles. They had Youths, Standard lengths, Golden boys,Frontiers and even some of those silver boys.

I picked up the Frontier model and thought it was nice. Then I picked up a standard length, round barrel model and..... Much better actually. On paper and researching, the Frontier model wins, but in person I thought that the octagon barrel made the gun overly heavy and unbalanced. In comparison, the standard model felt lite and balanced and it was about $60 cheaper to boot.

One thing that was consistent to all the Henry's I picked up was... the action was very nice. Out of all the lever guns I played with over the last month while shopping, the Henry's action had them all beat. I was very impressed with how smooth it was.

They also had some CZ 452 .22lr trainers and a couple of 455 trainers. A few lux models and one 455 FS (in 22 mag though). All so nice.... I walked back and forth between the racks thinking how nice the Henry and CZ was. I didn't buy anything in the end. I need to sleep on it some more and I got one more shop to visit.

It sounds like you have a little man standing on your left shoulder whispering " CZ is more accurate" and little man on your right shoulder whispering " the Henry is more fun"

I will shout it. THE HENRY IS MORE FUN. :D And it will be fairly accurate too.:)

How do you see yourself mainly shooting this rifle?

If you're gonna stand and plink, I'd get the Henry.

If you're gonna shoot paper for small groups off a rest or in field positions using a sling, I'd get the CZ Trainer.

In my case, I have 2 CZ 452s and 2 Marlin 39As. The Marlins are great guns, but they rarely get shot. I'm just not much of a plinker.

When I go to the indoor range, two of the rifles that usually accompany me are my 39A with 4X Bushnell scope and my super-accurate custom Rem 581 with a Lilja barrel, custom thumbhole stock, 6.5-20x scope, 15 oz trigger, and single-shot adaptor. Both will shoot under 1/4" groups at 50 feet and I tend to shoot the Rem 581 a bit better, but the 39A is more fun and a greater challenge.

The CZ 452 Trainer is a GREAT rifle and will hang with almost anything out there at 50 yards with the proper bullet. I had a trigger job done and had the action bedded. It is a great shooter and the iron sights are winners. I have a scope on mine now but the irons are perfect for anyone and especially for a new shooter. Another good choice is a Ruger 77-22. You can find them pretty easy now and they shoot pretty good also.

Thanks for all the replies.

Turns out I have a bit more time to mull this over. I had the money set aside and was going to make the purchase next weekend. (was leaning heavily towards Henry). But, my cheapo grill bit the dust this weekend and I told myself for my next grill I was going to spend the money and buy a Weber. So, I went out and bought the Weber today and used all my rifle money. I'll just revisit in July when its my birthday.. maybe I can drop some hints for a gift card to my favorite LGS from the wife, lol.
