It's not so much for better performance but for better quality. I have three Remington M700s, a BDL 30-06 made in 1981, a Classic in 30-06 made in 1985 IIRC and a 1986 Classic in .35 Whelen. (Was it 86 or 88 for that one, I forget.) Quality is good on all three rifles but I feel that the BDL is slightly nicer. All are good rifles. Since a conglomerate bought Remington,I hear the quality has gone rapidly down hill. What a shame for America's oldest gun company.
