looking for Remington 700 any tips?

"now it was reccomended i go for an older version due to better performance"

It's not so much for better performance but for better quality. I have three Remington M700s, a BDL 30-06 made in 1981, a Classic in 30-06 made in 1985 IIRC and a 1986 Classic in .35 Whelen. (Was it 86 or 88 for that one, I forget.) Quality is good on all three rifles but I feel that the BDL is slightly nicer. All are good rifles. Since a conglomerate bought Remington,I hear the quality has gone rapidly down hill. What a shame for America's oldest gun company. :(
This should help you determine date of manufacture.

BLACKPOWDER does not mean data for muzzleloaders. ;)

interesting.

it seems like a few of the american gun makers are getting cheap on their products . the only cheap one ive seen thats worth the money is the american (ruger) my buddie has.

i was looking at the mossberg 100 atr for a bit, but its not a detachable magazine, the prce was low at 250$ with a scope. but thems the breaks

but id say the main point, is to build a budget rifle that can be accurate , has a magazine, and i can get an alternative stock on that aids in function of accuracy.

Have you looked at Howa? I had a 1500 in .308 and my only gripe was the stock being too flexible and heavy. I sold that rifle to fund my M1A and I slightly regret that. As a bonus Howa uses Remington length weaver bases. A Howa 1500 combo package can be had for about $600 at Sportsman's Warehouse that comes with an entry-level scope (Nikko Sterling Nighteater 3-10) and a UTG bipod. It will get you started, at the very least. Upgrade to a B&C Medalist and glass bed, slap on a better scope, tweak your loads, and you have a very competent rifle and you won't be able to blame a miss on your equipment.

hmm ive never heard of the Howa 1500, i do like the look, is it internal magazine or detachable?

how far is the bolt pull and how much degree is the turning factor for the bolt?

i did some research on the howa 1500, and its surprisingly accurate and well made.

has a kit for timny triger, magazine and a few other goodies. its really an amazing rifle and im surprised at the cost 450 -560$'s shipped in by legacy arms
to an ffl, and in 308 with lots of customization options. with accuracy and parts similar to weatherby vanguard.

....why havent i heard of these things?

i think you just helped me find my next rifle WeedWacker.

now for tracking one down and beginning a project budget

hi guys,

im new to the firing line and this is literally my first post.

this is just my experience:

i bought a 700 sps varmint with 26" from bass pro this past May and I loved the feel of it.

initially, even with factory premium ammo, i could not get it to group under 10" @175 yrds - painful

after doing a bedding job, and buying a reloading die for it, it tightened up a little bit to around 6" at 175 yrds but thats still terrible - especially for handloads.

i then went all out at figured that if i ruin the stock, i can just have an excuse to buy a nice BC or HS precision.

I bought a 5' long aluminum I beam from RONA for ~15$, a two part epoxy enough for 10 bedding jobs for another $15.

after removing all the internal plastic reinforcement inside the stock and channeling out the forend for the barrell contour, i put the aluminum bars in the forend of the stock and literally FILLED it to the top with epoxy.

i then proceeded to fully bed the action to about 1" in front of the lug nut.

verdict

a fully free floated r 700 sps varmint

i took it to the range the next day and i shot sub moa at 100yrds all day - no matter what load i had for it.

i rang a metal plate out at 380 yards shot after shot until my ammunition ran out.

its hard to find any reloading components in canada right now for some reason so i didnt have much selection on powder.
after a few weeks of trial and error, i found my 700 liked speer 168 gr HPBT backed by right on the dot 41 gr of AA2230 and cci 200 primers winchester or federal brass never did much of a difference.

end of the day, if the load mentioned above consistently rings the gong at 380 yrds, im happy and for $45 (15 for the epoxy, 15 for the aluminum re-bar, and 15 for the 6 pack) and a solid saturday evening, I found myself an awesome target/tactical rifle for a deal!!!

hope this post helps anyone looking to improve their groupings ( and their love for this slowly dieing brand)

-B
