Looking for first handgun

I'm leaning toward a minimum caliber of 9mm

Perfect!

Everybody says the .357mag or the 45acp would be the best, but the 9mm still is not that far off IMHO for SD (bypeds), very good round, Ruger did it right.:)

choice

I recommend looking for a S&W 669 semi in 9mm. Compact with 14 round mag (one in chamber) single/double action with de-cocker. adjustible sights. the are getting scarce..............

I'd suggest you look at the Ruger P-90 and also their P345. They are both .45 ACP caliber. The former is fairly thick, the latter is a bit more svelte...try 'em both and see which one fits your hands best. Both are extremely reliable and come with manual safeties. You should also be able to find one or the other in your price range. Good luck!

Carpenter,
Any gun requires practice. I suggest getting a .22 revolver or a beretta Neos. I have both and they are great. If you don't want to buy a plinker, then borrow or go to a range to shoot one. If that is a negative then a .38 special revolveror better yet a 1911 with a conversion .22 kit. Good shooting and have fun practicing.

Another vote for the CZ. It sounds like you want a pistol rather than a revolver and the CZ is an excellent gun, period. The price is right. An H&K would also fit your requirements, but the price is higher than you are looking at. Another option might be a used Baretta 92 in 9 or 96 in 40.

I've never owned a CZ but I have the ruger P series. They are very affordable and well built, great first handgun.
