Looking for an AR. Need advice

I am looking for an AR, sometime this summer. Ideally, I would like to spend under 1k on the rifle itself, and then some more on add-ons.
I want a solid product, I've heard to many stories of these guns jamming too often. I would be open to one that shot 6.8 or other calibers, but the .223 is nice for cheap ammo. Advice on brands would be nice. Let it fly!
Thanks

I have heard just the opposite. As a matter of fact, I think the AR platform may be about the most reliable of any out there regardless of what brand you buy. This is not to say that they are all equal in quality as obviously this is not the case, but even the most inexpensive guns are very reliable for the vast majority of shooters.JMO

I would argue that the ak platform is more reliable (in the sense of jams and just knowing its going to shoot) than most guns out there. I've shot over 2k rounds through mine, not one jam. How many AR owners can say the same? Only AR I ever shot was jamming up ever 2-3 rds

I have shot many thousands of rounds through many different AR'/M16s and to the best of my memory I have never had one fail in any way except the one I have now and I was experimenting with different powder charges and got a little too light causing it to short stroke on me. I also tried a heavier buffer in it once and caused it to not cycle properly as well but neither of those were the fault of the weapon itself.
As to the Colt 6920 it is a flat top A3 configuration and would be easy to mount a scope and it probably is the best bet for the money.

There are plenty of AR owners who can honestly tell you that they have shot their AR 2000 rounds without an issue. If you doubt this, just visit some of the 3gun matches in your area and you will see a plethora of reliable rifles in attendance. You can also just ask some of the competitors or even some of the spectators and hear the same. The AR is a great reliable platform.

One of the pictures I found of the 6920 is with the carrying rail. Can this just be removed, and underneath is a picatanny rail?

i just recently got a stag model 2 its a flat top with front post and flip up rear sight for 900 out the door. havent got to shoot it much but not heard anything bad about them

Picked up my S&W M&P for $699 (On sale) and also got a $100 rebate from S&W for being Military.

It has been a fantastic rifle. Zero issues and accurate.

Here is a pick with optics, Bi-pod and Magpul furniture.

I would say that the AR you shot was either filthy beyond belief or was shooting crappy ammo. I have shot thousands of rounds through AR's and the only failures I've had were directly related to ammo. Those were reloads that were either sized wrong (neck sized only), or had reduced powder charges.

I really like my AK, but my AR's are so much more accurate, it's really not even close. An added feature is that you can change the barrel and/or the caliber in about 30 seconds.

If you want to go out and shoot cans at 25-50 yards the AK is great fun.

If you want to hit your target at 100-300 yards the AR is the rifle you want.

The main reason the AK is considered "more reliable" is that they are designed and built with tolerances adequate to allow a lot of debris in the system and still have room to function. This is also why they're not usually exceptionally accurate.
The AR is made to closer tolerances providing a higher level of accuracy while maintaining a suitable functionality. My SIL has 2 tours in Iraq and has no complaints about the M16/M4 even in high dust/heavy fire situations. I have several AR rifles that have mix and match internal parts that I've used in snow, rain, and dust w/o any functional issues.
Keep the AR somewhat clean, lubed, and feed it decent ammo and the rifle will work fine.

I guess i should have stated when it jammed, it was shooting steel cased ammo. But still, the ak was shooting the same, with no problems. I was shooting them side by side, and the ar jammed. Since Colt and LMT have both gotten good reviews from you guys, which of the 2 is better? Do either offer a lifetime warranty? A lifetime warranty is pretty important to me.

I don't think I mentioned I would like this with a 2 stage trigger. Should I just build my own???? If so, which is the best route to build?

Buy a stripped lower, a lower parts kit minus trigger and then buy the trigger and butt-stock of your choice. Or go with this: http://www.surplusammo.com/rock-riv...ver-parts-kit-with-2-stage-trigger-for-ar-15/

Now your at $626.00. Just pick the front sight base/gas block of your choice, hanguards and butt stock and flash hider and you should be about there. You could do that for around $150 on up depending on what you prefer. Feel free to substitute any of the above, they are just some examples. If you want a 6.8SPC take a look at Bison Armory for the Barrel and get a matching bolt from them, otherwise all is same but magazines.
