Looking for advice

Rem 870 or Mossberg with birdshot.

Way more decisive than any pistol, way less liability from shooting through walls.
remember you gotta clean up the mess. dont get too adventurous with a shotty.

great points everyone....i will also say 357 and get a ruger....you get the added benifit of being able to pass down te firearm to said child one day.....cause chances are this will be the first of several handguns you by

Welcome johnny,
As your name suggests I'm going to assume your in my neck of the woods and would suggest checking these guys out, udrange.com. I am relatively new myself and they have been exceptionally helpful. They are an indoor range and training center with a wide variety of weapon rentals. They have everything from .22lr all the way up to .223 ar-15's. It gave me a great bit of experience to handle and fire several brands, styles, calibers before I bought any!
Good luck and congrats on the baby!:)

Lots of people recommend a shotgun for home defense, but they never talk about the need to train with one. The shotgun can be a great home defense tool, but it does require training and proper ammunition. Do not, I repeat do not use bird shot. Use 00 buck in whatever load patterns well for you and make sure it keeps all pellets in an 8' circle at 15 yards. Shotguns do not usually spread way out at short ranges like in the movies, and yes you must aim them. Watch the Magpul dynamic shotgun dvd's if you want to get a good education on the shotgun in a defensive role.

As far as handgun goes, I have something on my nightstand that is almost exactly what you are looking for. It's a CZ SP-01 in 9mm. It's full size, has a rail, night sights, safety and a 19 round capacity for less than $600. It's a fantastic weapon and CZ makes excellent products. I also have a TLR-1 light mounted on it and I really think the light is great for a home defense gun. It's worth the extra $100 for the light.

You said you were going to get some training, and that is a great idea, join IDPA and shoot some matches, they are great for learning to handle a weapon in lots of scenarios and they make you train reloading, using cover etc... Watch the Magpul dynamic handgun dvd's as well, they are great and even cover concealed carry and gear choices.

If you decide on a semi-auto, a used, "police trade-in" Smith & Wesson Model 5906 in nice condition would be a good choice. An affordable (you should be able to find one for well under $500.00 or so), reliable, well-made pistol that is chambered in the relatively inexpensive 9mm ammunition might make it the perfect choice for you.
And welcome to The Firing Line!

Handgun: Ruger sR9c ..... around $400 ..... spend the remainder on practice ammo and a decent handgun course.

Get a Gunvault.

I do not know about a revolver for a first time gun owner, if a revolver locks up, theres no way you can fix that.

Get a semi auto, just rack the slide to fix the problem. You said you shot a Glock before? do you like it? buy one of those?

Glocks are simple, no locks or safty to worry about, revolvers have those internal saftys that I heard after shooting a while you can, might have the chance to turn it on from the recoil.:barf::eek:

You need to buy a safe also.

Go to a range that rents handguns and try as many as you can.

My recommendations...

If you choose a revolver:

Ruger GP100 .357 magnum with 4" barrel

If you choose an autoloader:

Ruger SR9c
Glock 19
S&W M&P9c
SA XDm9 3.8"

I know you asked about a handgun, but anyone not familiar with guns that asks me about home defense, I tell them to go with a 12ga.

That being said, if you do settle on a handgun, I recommend 9mm, because you will quickly become addicted to your local range.

Go with a used sig p226 or p229. I don't recommend the sp2022. Just not very good quality for a sig.

If you are set on new, look at the springfield xd series or the ever reliable cz 75b.

You shot your FIL's Glock? Did you like it? Does he have any other pistols you can try?

If you like the Glock and G19, 9MM, would be a good pistol for HD as well as carry if you choose. It will really do it all, and be a good, range gun for practice also.

Other 9MM's in this class arre:

CZ-75D PCR
Springfield XDm compact

Nothing wrong with a four inch revolver in .357 Mag or .38 Spl either. A used S&W or Ruger would work.
