Looking for a very small, light pistol...

I have an old .380 AMT Backup DAO (18 oz 5+1 rounds)I use for jogging. I use it in an Active Body "sport holster" www.politesociety.com which is inexpensive and really work!

I also own a Keltec P11 (14 oz 10+1 rounds)in 9mm and a P32 (6.6 oz 7+1 rounds) in .32, both which function flawlessly. I would recommend either one. I would stay away from Taurus semi-auto line, they are just cheap copies of some other gun. I've heard their revolvers are OK.

The reason I use the old AMT Backup for jogging instead of either Keltec is because it's stainless steel. When you run, you will sweat profusely. Moisture will absolutely transfer to the gun. The stainless gun will resist rusting better. My AMT DOES have rust and pitting on the exterior from all the moisture and the years of running - and it is stainless!

If I had to buy a gun today for running, I would look into NAA Guardian in .380, but it might be too pricey? Otherwise, I would get a hard chromed P11, plenty of rounds and light. Don't even waste your money on a blued gun!

Kermit makes a good point.
Taurus revolvers are an excellent value, and may serve the purpose well.

BTW- if anyone tells you Taurus revolvers are junk, you can just ignore everything else they say since it might equally be bulls**t as well.

I have had a couple of Taurus guns. They have all been good firearms. The revolvers are tough...one of a few manufactures that give the .357 a +p+ rating. The metal semi autos are top
of the line..my .40 shot with the best of them. The polymers are
in question and typically Taurus will take care of the problem quickly. I have never used the lifetime warranty but here there
customer service is very good.

I sold a Taurus in the local paper on Sunday. Ran the ad for 1 day. I wasn't letting my gun go cheaply but at a fair price. I am
still receiving calls tonight. Which is 4 days and 57 phone calls later...but who is counting. Shoot well

Taurus guns junk, huh!

by Rugerfreak...

In other words---stay away from the Taurus and Kel-tec junk.

Keltec HAS had reliability problems in the past, but junk? I think not. They solved their problems. Any problems you might have now are taken care of, usually without question. Their customer service is among the best in the industry. The P32 is acclaimed by it's owners and there are many on this board who have the P32 on their 'must own' list.

As for Taurus. Well, I suggest you read the article "Forging A Name For Itself" in this month's "American Rifleman" magazine. The article is devoted to Taurus. In it, Tauris is described as 'One of the most technically advanced firearms manufacturers in the world'. All of their firearms are machined from solid, forged blocks of metal using CNC or EDM machines. Designs are created using CAD/CAM technology. It's line of mouse guns is manufactured here in the US in Miami, FL. due to the import restrictions imposed by the GCA of 1968. The PT92 is was originally manufactured using Beretta's own tooling bought by Taurus in 1980. Finally, Taurus is an ISO9001 rated company. Reasonably priced, yes, but calling Taurus pistols junk! I think you'll get more than a few arguments from gunshop owners and Taurus owners the concerning you opinion,

(Chime in anytime you think appropriate, Tamara).

I have a Kel Tec P11, and a P32.

Neither are what I call junk, but the P11 trigger has to be the worst thing i have ever tried to pull. The trigger is extremely heavy, and stacks bad at the end of the pull. This P11 is accurate on man sized sillhouettes only to about 20 or 25 feet at the most.
In short, I am not a big fan of the P11.

Now the P32 is another story. It has a considerably better and lighter trigger. It is also more accurate than the P11.

I have never had a jam with the 32, but the 11 has jammed a time or two in the few hundred rounds I have put through it.

Snowdog,
BTW- if anyone tells you Taurus revolvers are junk, you can just ignore everything else they say since it might equally be bulls**t as well.

Right on the money, I finally put the ignore user function to use after reading that "other" post.

My son has a PT-111. I have fired it many times at the range. IMHO it is a fine weapon. Like my Ruger P-89 pre-ban, it goes BANG every time he or I have pulled the trigger. It hits what I have aimed at. (Better for me than him-makes him mad) Do I like it? Not as much as my Ruger, but that's me. He also has a H&K USP compact in .40 cal. I've fired all three back to back. The H&K to me has a tricky trigger. Once used to it, it's fine-but on the first shot, it's too easy. Fired before I wanted it to. I still liked it, although it had lots of recoil, compared to the 9s.
He thought about selling the Taurus before he bought the H&K, and before I got my P89. I told him I'd take the 111 in a heartbeat, as I thought it was a fine piece, especially for the money. Remind you of a Ruger?
Hate to tell some of you this, but he thinks my P89 is better than his H&K. I suggested he holds judgement until he gets his Hogue grips. The gun needs them.
The Taurus may not have the prestige of other firearms, or the price (like Rugers), but judging from the PT-111, I'd say they are capable pieces. Know what you want to do, and select a firearm that is up to the task, and fits you. BTW, my son lives in VA-both the Taurus and H&K are great for CCW. He open carries either occasionally. I'm stuck here in MO where they elect dead people.
IMHO, the if your friend likes the Taurus, tell him to get it. He could do worse.

Here's my shot group today from my piece of trash P-11 using 124gr federal nyclads offhand at 10yrds. Of course, I only have 11,500 rds thru it, so I guess I probably haven't given it a good enough work out. Trash? Please...
Wish my scanner worked as well.

Have no idea about Taurus revolvers...

Never even laid my eyes on one, or if I did, I didn't realize it was a Taurus. The guns look cool, but I've heard too much negative stuff about them to purchase one. That is IMO.

Ignoring the posts of other memebers......how cheesy.

On a college budget........New Bulgarian Makarov....plenty around for $130, and new holster is included in the price. Add Makarov 9X18 ammo, 100rds for $12.....your buddy's pockets are only $142 lighter and I've never met an unhappy Makarovian....Dan in GA

Taurus

State of the art machinery run by uneducated monkeys still makes for junk. The Berreta tooling for making 92's is worn-out by now. Their revolvers are still poor imitations of the dreaded S&W monster. The last Taurus I handled in the store (a PT111)--literally was falling apart in my hands----needless to say---I didn't buy it.

Kel-tec

All these guys out there saying "my KT has 2 rounds through it and it still didn't break"---oh and the service is great. Why is it that all I hear is the service is great???---is it because every other KT owner has had to send it in?? Is the service going to be all that great when your crappy KT falls apart when you REALLY need it???

If you buy a Glock or one of the better 1911's----you can reasonably expect it to go for at least 100,000 rounds without a problem.

It just bugs me when people say that junk is good and some newbie goes and buys one---and then gets burned--- only to get half what they paid in the first place on a trade for something better. The money could be better spent in the first place.

Hit the nail on the head.....

Right on!

You know Ruger, one thing I really like about about Kel-tec's service to it's customers is that it has never backed a gun control issue, like say, limits on hi cap mags. But we all decide just where we'll draw the line I suppose. FWIW I've owned two glocks and found both of them to be lacking, and currently own two very nice 1911's, but from morning to night, my P-11 rides my hip.

That doesn't mean their gun's aren't crap.

Uneducated monkeys?!? The arrogance of some of our so-called "experts" never ceases to amaze me. I'd bet that some of these "uneducated monkeys" have more education than you!

As for the out of date tooling statement. Do you think the members of this board have 'stupid' written across our foreheads? Do you expect any of us to believe that Taurus is using 21 YEAR OLD TOOLING TO PRODUCE PISTOLS!!!Please!!!

Poor imitation of S&W, huh. A few of Taurus' firsts: First use of Titanium in revolvers. First total Titanium revolvers. First 7 shot revolvers chambered for .357. First revolver chambered for .454 Casull, the Raging Bull. Not the type of inovation I'd expect from some third world, simian managed company.

If you don't like Taurus, fine. Say after me, "I DON'T LIKE TAURUS. I LIKE RUGER!" and then recommend Ruger.

BTW, I don't even own a Taurus. I'd like someday to own both the Raging Hornet and the Raging Bull. I would, however, be happy to recommend any of their products as an alternative to something more expensive.

This is amazing to me. The people (plural, meaning more than I for those of you who went to college) who slam gun makes especially when not bringing certain models, time lines and specific problems into the equation are just talking out their AS*!
Everytime these types of people post..they just prove my point.

I ran into these types of people/walking opinions when I was an
MSF Instructor. They rarely got to be excellent riders.
When they would crash and we all saw and conveyed the
problem...it was something else...it was the motorcycle. They already knew everything, didnt listen and ultimately, werent teachable....but this could be COMPLETELY different!

Get the gun you want...one you like...if you like a purple gun that shoots rubber bands...get and enjoy it. "A gun is inherently not
a rational purchase..mostly one based on emotion"

Shoot well

OK, Let me have it....go for it

My full sized 1911 dont flop around when I jog. You just gotta search out the right holster arrangment for your needs.

Pistols are for emergencies, correct? If a given situation deteriorates to the point of having to actually pull a GUN, why play games?

Also, in a high stress situation, where you might actually need to use your gun, larger pistols are much easier to shoot effectivly.

Guns should be comforting, rather than comfortable.
