My wife has become very fond of her 3" Model 36, loaded with HBWC loads, for home defense. Although one of her plinking guns has become my SP101, also loaded with .38 HBWCs, the extra round in the cylinder and over-all balance (21.4 oz. Smith vs. 28 ounces for the Ruger) gives her more confidence & peace of mind.
The abundance of after-market grips will most likely afford your wife an option that will suit her comfort-based preference. Around these parts, used 36s are common and affordable, although the 3" versions are less so.
