looking for a powder

I'd try Varget!!! but for easy measuring I'd be giving IMR 8208 a hard look. Its a ball powder so it flows like water, but is reported to be temerpature insensitive.

Go to would be Varget or Reloder 15,

However.....

Looking at the Hogdon manual the new CFE223 is showing good velocities in both 223, and 308...

Might want to give it a try...

I've got load tests set up for 168gr. MatchKings .308
And it's working well for some of my .257 Roberts...

Nope, don't want a 60gr V-Max. Away from my log so I can't say at the moment the charge weight of Varget I was using but it was under a 50gr V-Max, it was under Hodgdon's published max load and it was an awful experience attempting to fit every powder drop in to each case.

Life is too short and the options are FAR too many to spend time & energy with that nonsense. My nearly full pound will live out it's dream some day in a different caliber. If it works for others, I totally back their pursuit. And more Varget for them as I won't be buying all of it up.:D

This thread and every other website you ever visit, is heavily in favor of VARGET.

I think we should all form a petition to rename that powder to:

"Magic, you can do no wrong, and if you do wrong, you are WRONG, Powder"

LOL

Varget does not meter "great". And its more expensive. It meters fine, but not great, no way. No chance. W748 meters great, way better than Varget

But ya, its top, top tier powder in 223 and 308.

If you can get it.

I only have a small amount of Varget, but a whole lot of IMR4895 to use up, so...

A guy needs to show character and crunch 4895 through his RCBS UNIFLOW powder measure.
Be a man.
Keep crunching.

I load a ton of 223 and 308 using H335 and Ramshot TAC. They are very inexpensive and very good powders. The 308 eats up powder like there is no tomorrow.

Ramshot TAC is hard to find, and when it's available, it disappears quickly. TAC has the coolest packaging of any powder.

I've never seen 48 pounds of Varget for sale, so cost per shot will be higher. That's my only problem with Varget.

It's the target that tells you if you need to obsessively worry about charge weight. Unless you are shooting sub-0.25 MOA, you are wasting time, but if it makes you happy, go for it.
If that is what you want, then get a powder dispenser and be done with it. That will meter ALL powders perfectly.

BTDT. ;)

You know, 4895 is such a versatile powder, learning to crunch it through a powder measure is a lifetime skill. I've even had some fun with it in reduced loads in 30-06. (H4895 that is).
