Im looking into getting a SD shotgun. I recently (within the past year) have bought a G19, Magpul AR, and now im looking to get a SD shotgun. I have an idea of what i want and a certain price range. Here is what im wanting

18" Barrel
6+ Shell Capacity
Pump
Composite would be best i think
Easy to put upgrades on (availibity)
Be able to shoot slugs and breaching rounds

Im looking to keep this around 500 dollars if possible.

If you could post some options and maybe some pics of your setups would be nice. Thanks a lot

Mossberg or Remington will get the nod 98% of the time, followed by other pumps and a few semi's, most of which have been legally altered

Mossberg 930SPX works perfect for me. May be a bit over your $500 limit but would highly recommend it. Last I checked it was in the $600 range. Mine was hard to get with a long wait a year ago.

Benelli Supernova, new around $450 - 500, you can find them with 7+ 1 magizne tube, the Supernova will take the 2 3/4', 3' and 3.5' rounds, it overall is a good solid choice. :)

Rem 870 Tactical 6+1 in 12 or 20ga right from the factory, very dependable and a hugh assortment of aftermarket parts available. Mine has over 500 rounds through it and not one single glitch. It has an 18" barrel and will serve you well for a lifetime, and well within your budget.

Pardner Pump?

Before any gun snob scoffs at my suggestion hear me out.

I have a H&R Pardner Pump with carbon fiber dip and 18" barrel. I bought the Pardner then put a tactical sling and sidesaddle on the gun and have $250 in it so far. That leaves you $250 in your budget to add tactical light, etc.

I know it is not a big name gun like Beretta, Remington, Mossberg, etc. but it has been super dependable for me so far. I made the decision to buy it based on 2 major criteria points.

1) Low cost. Notice, I didn't say cheap. The gun feels good and I didn't want to put $500 in a gun that would stand beside my bed and get shot very few times a year.

2) The majority of 870 items will interchange with the Pardner.

Now you have my thoughts/position on this, for what it's worth.

TenWheeler, Did you price the 500 before buying the Pardner from China/Turkey?

The Mossberg is just now gettin' up to that $250 mark with inflation...

Why pump? I like the mossberg 930spx and the benelli m4 as autos, both have good systems. The best pump I could think of is the 1200 ranger series, they can still be found on gunbroker. An older 870 would do fine if you don't mind modifying it. I'm not a supporter of the mossberg 500, not my cup of tea.

Wow thanks for all of the options here guys. Im going to have to look into all of these. I dont know why but im not really a semi auto shotgun guy. I own one for birds but theres something about hearing that pump that gets me going. Might be enough to scare away a bad guy if need be.

Pictures anybody?

Like you have mentioned im interested so far in the Benelli Supernova Tactical, Mossberg 500's, and the Remington 870.

big name like Mossberg does not mean expensive - Mossberg is about as inexpensive as you can get, it is US made, and if given a smidgen of care, will last a long time

You can't go wrong with a Remington or a Mossberg. However, if you're a left-handed shooter, the Mossberg's safety is easier to operate.

im not a real fan of the remingtons for some reason. ill stick with the Mossberg or Benelli.

Looking for used mostly because of the price.

yea im leaning more towards the mossberg right now. the benelli would be nice but its at the top of my price range. id rather go with a mossberg for 350 and spend the other 150 on ammo or upgrades

You can buy a 500 field gun (26 inch barrel with accu choke threads) with nice lookin' wood stocks for WAYYY under $350. Then buy you a 18 inch barrel for around a hundred. Now you have a choice of keep the long barrel for hunting or sports and the short for HD setup. Or you can sell the NEW 26 inch for near a hundred.

The reason I suggest this is that a short barreled 500 in simple plastic is nearly a hundred bucks more than a field gun for no other reason than the supply and demand thing and the gullability of the "tacky-cool" crowd of buyers.

Heck, I often see the field and short combo for the $350 of a short barreled gun.
