Looking for a fun, cheap to shoot gun

He could always move up to a larger gun like a CZ75 in 9mm. Walmart has had bulk 9mm ammo on sale before for 8.99 for a 100 rounds. I also think they have a .22 conversion that can be had for a little more money.:)

Ruger MKII wins hands down !!

The Ruger is a fine choice, BUT for plinking fun I have a Walther PP 22. Unfortunately they are not common and are expensive, but the new Walther P22 will be an excellent fun plinking .22 for around $200. Smaller and lighter than the Ruger as well though probably not as accurate.

To try and break up the Ruger monopoly, try the Browning Buck Mark. Nothing wrong with the Rugers, just adding something different to the mix.

There is this one company that makes a real good 22 cal auto. Very accurate and very well built.
I think it is call Ruger MKII.They also make many differant variations.

I suggest the 22/45 over the .22 because of a few reasons. First, the grip angle is like the 1911's. So if you get one [1911] later on, you will be use to the shooting position of it. Second, the controls are in the familiar place. The slide lockback is where it's suppose to be, and more importantly, the magazine release is where you'd expect it to be, on the side by the trigger housing.

It's a tack driver, pure and simple...

Also, it digests anything and everything, all day long. $10 brick from Kmart, you are good to go for an entire day.

MKII

My Ruger MKII sucks. It jams every other shot. The extractor doesn't work half the time either. I have almost thrown it away a couple of times but I am sure I will just bring it to some pawn shop and get the $20 it is worth. I will never buy a MkII again. The clips suck too. My fingers get so sore from those pieces of crap. Do your friend a favor and tell him not to buy that piece of junk. The 22 I use that never fails and is really accurate and a pleasure to shoot is my Colt 22LR.

So there you go.....Only one "The Ruger sux" out of how many? Go with the Ruger. Wonderful pistol. It will go nicely with your Ruger 10/22 rifle. :)

If you gonna throw it away please make sure it lands in my garbage can so I can fish it out.;)

I will never part with my MKII and would love to get one for my wife.

Oh, I vote MKII any day. :D

COLT

I guess no one here has the Colt target match .22LR. That makes the Ruger MkII look like a Geo Prizm next to a Porsche 911. I am sticking with my comments I made about the Ruger MKII and I pray that everyone doesn't have as much problems with their MKII as I have had with my MKII.

"I have almost thrown it away a couple of times but I am sure I will just bring it to some pawn shop and get the $20 it is worth."

I'll offer $50 sight unseen for it. :)

I honestly don't understand why so many here think the Ruger is so good. They are difficult to take apart and re-assemble,they look like a piece of plumbing-consider that pressed frame.Sure they shoot OK,but so does just about any .22.I had a MK 11 stainless and it wouldn't like some ammo, usually the lighter projectiles. When I got a Browning(Medalist) I had no further .22 problems.I wouldn't have another Ruger in a fit.Maybe it's because they are cheap that they are so well liked--I hope not though.

Let's see, my Ruger MK-II's are easy to strip and assemble, shoot great, and are stone reliable. That's probably why I like them. I'm sure there are other .22 pistols that are a fine choice, but there's no reason to denigrate the MK-II.

Ruger

And now for my 100th post and Senior Member status, drum roll please........Thanks!!!!!

If no one has suggested the Ruger MK-II's or the 22/45 then I'll eat my Ruger 22/45.:D

Great shooting gun for the kids and for me.;)

CHEAP??? compared to what? I'd say for fun shooting, the 22lr is the caliber to go with. You can shoot 500 rounds for less than $20.
Now the gun...hmmm...Make room on that band wagon, I'm voting for the Ruger Mk II. :D

Ok - I'll be the odd man out.

The gun can be had for about $135 in unissued condition, ammo is cheap - about $5 for a box of 50, it is accurate & the gun will shoot forever. (This one has been customized with sights, a Pearce grip, & Nolan HiDrop - but you get the idea).

Really a blast to own & shoot!
