Looking for a first revolver

So I got my card yesterday and I can't seem to find a 617 anywhere. The closest shop to me has a 6" in stock but everyone says get the 4". I'm at a dead end now

A 4" ruger sp 101 in .22 is probably stocked in any given gun shop. Never shot one but they look nice IMO and I hear good things about them

The 4" 617 handles/balances better than the 6". It is a heavy gun for a .22.
I used to have a 4" 617. It was a companion to my 5" 686. I liked shooting it fast double action but that ruined the timing. Fortunately, S&W has very good CS. They fixed the revolver two separate times under warranty but after the second time, I told my self that I was done with timing issues. I sold the 617. Also, I did not like cleaning lead build up on the throat (area where the bullet would jump from the cylinder to the barrel. It was a good revolver. I just did not know how to take care of it at the time. No regrets selling my 617.
I have not felt the want to get a .22 Revolver but if I am to get a .22 revolver I would choose a 617 with 6" with the intention of using it only for target shooting (no fast DA shots).

For the money, I would rather have a 1911 in .45 and an Advantage Arms .22 conversion.

Taurus makes a 4-6" 22 revolver.. If this is simply a [trainer], I wouldn't spend S&W level money for that. I would save that money for a larger cal handgun.

Just a couple thoughts about starting with a 22. It is an easier gun to handle when you are learning, and ammo is inexpensive for learning. It is a fun gun to shoot and plink around with. But if your end goal is home or self defense, 22 is not much of a caliber for that. If that is not your goal, it is likely a good place to start. If that is your goal then this is just a starter and learning gun and will likely not be your weapon of choice soon. I would consider that when choosing.

If you are buying a used gun, I would go with a high dollar gun, but if you want a new gun, I would buy a less costly model until I was certain that it would get used and was not just a passing fancy.

I have a Taurus 9 shot 22 with a 4" barrel. It does well without breaking the bank. You can spend big bucks for a much nicer gun, and wind up never shooting it.
