Looking at a 28-2 Value?

Well I went and checked it out in more detail today. I ended up getting it for $540 with 25 rounds of factory .357 Mag. It was a private sale so it was out the door at that price. Snapped a few quick pics. Grips look correct but the emblems are little worn. Other than that and the small finish wear on the front of the muzzle.

Gun locks up tight and cylinders lined up. I was not able to shoot it today but will get out as soon as I can. I just double checked and the grips are not original to the gun. The serial number does not match but to my untrained eyes they are period correct.

Man! I was correct, that's in far better condition than mine. I think you got a very sweet deal.

I wouldn't even take that out for one range trip with those stocks on it. :p I don't know who on this planet actually likes the way those feel & handle. With heavy loads, those would be awful.

My 28 with Pachmayr Decelerators (yep, I'm sure many think my choice is horrendous also, but I'm a guy who grew up in the 80s...) is just a pure pleasure to shoot with even the heaviest ammo I can craft.

Great looking revolver you found.

Looking at it in person I could not pass on it. It was the best 28 I have seen in a long time at a fair price. I was supposed to only buy 1 S&W .357 Mag, which I did a 19-3, but this one just popped up and I had to have it.

Now I just have to fess-up and let the wife know about the new gun.

So any other grip recommendations.

Very nice! That is in nicer condition than the ones at cabelas; the turn line is much more faint. I personally like the magnas as they let's me get a higher grip, but to each their own.

I am not going to be shooting really hot loads so I am going to try out the Magnas and then go from there.

IMHO, it's hard to beat a set of Magna's with a Tylers T-grip added. Might take you a while to get one, I haven't tried lately, but I think they're worth the hassle.

I was hoping to get them down to about $550 on the $800 one, but that wasn't happening.
Yeah, 28s have really gone up in the last five years, and 27s even more.
Five or six years ago, a guy at work had a nice 6" M-28 (box, papers, etc) for, IIRC, $625-650. I thought it was a bit steep at the time, and maybe it was. But if I'd bought it then, it would be a deal today.
Nice older S&W revolvers seem to be a bit like real estate used to be: you can't pay too much, you can just buy too early. :)
Wait a bit and the market will catch up to you.

OP, nice 28. Enjoy.

Thanks...

This is really true even in today's tactical plastic world. The wheel guns keep going up. I think it is because the older one made before a lot of the current model manufacturing techniques simply will never come back. It is the same as a 1911. There are so few if any 1911s made today the old school way. That is why old GI gun and things like Sistema Colts keep going up in value.

I think that as one market of S&Ws dries up the next one get hot because people want the older guns that are no longer produced or at least not produced in the same way.

I look at todays S&Ws and other revolvers and I just see too many short-cuts and dollar driven, price point meeting & lawyer compromises.

YMMV
