Long story...

Department stores, hardware stores, even some drug stores sold guns and ammo into the 1980s (I have some primers with a Payless drug store price tag).
Now, some sporting goods stores don't!
Strange world.
 
Saxon, that's a nice pistol with a great history. Leave it to your son. Or daughter. Or adopt someone appropriate. Or someone else who would appreciate it.
 
I guess it would be wasteful but I have considered telling my wife to bury this one with me.

Great story about an iconic American firearm. Looks like it has aged gracefully, and your improvements are befitting such a close companion.

When my brother was manager of a Firestone tire store in the mid-1960s, they sold rifles & shotguns. I bought a Stevens single shot .22 rifle from his store for $15. It was a closeout IIRC.
