LONG RANGE

Pointer,
My newest acquisition is a Cooper Model 54 Laminate Varminter in 260 Remington with a Leupold V3 4.5X14X40 with Talley Rings. This rifle has a heavy SS 26" barrel and you're not going to pack it around in the woods but rather set it up on a bench or field bags for long range shooting! She shoots 0.291" 3 shot groups at 100 yards with handloads pushing 120Gr Sierra Match Kings @ 2,800FPS! Zeroed @ 300Yds, that's a 35" drop @ 500 Yds and a 364" drop @ 1,000 Yds. With the scopes Boone & Crockett reticle I can do direct holds @ 600 Yds! Shooting is a compromise... I chose this setup because it provides barrel life, accuracy, recoil management, and it's "realistically doable"! Research... the internet is your friend!

600 yard zero?

Sighted in at 200 it drops about 265 inches at 1000 yards.

Please note that the ONLY reason I suggested a 600 yard zero was for long range (up to 1000 yards) shooting. Not for 200, 300 etc.

It is also noteworthy that a BDC and or target style turret will take care of other ranges... I'm fine with a 200 yard zero...

I can think of nothing better than a .300 Win Mag.
You can do better ballistically (somewhat) but there are more choices in .300 Win Mag to give you a chance for good results from factory loads.

Thank you to BOTH Jim's, that's what I'm asking for... input to help me to blueprint a long range shooter.

6.5-.284 Winchester is an excellent choice,
I agree.... but... I don't want to be required to hand load for variety and accessibility.

Leupold V3 4.5X14X40 with Talley Rings... and Boone and Crocket reticle.
Thank you Stealth01 for this info... now we're cookin' with gas!
Beautiful rifle BTW

trajectory

It doesn't matter where you zero your sights the trajectory will always be the same.

The trajectory is shaped more like a hook than a rainbow...
It is much "flatter" at the front than at the end...
Therefore, zeroing at 600 will give you less drop at 1000. It isn't required to zero at 200 if your expected shots are going to be more than 500 yards. :)

Thank you for your input... lots of good stuff there and great links.

EVERYBODY
Thank you for your assistance. It's been a great help...

I believe I will go with a Sendero.
I will go with the 300 Win.
I will go with a 6-24x Vortex Viper PST with first focal plain and MOA/MOA.

I think (now) that it is better for me to buy a rifle already setup from the factory like the Sendero than to "build" one from a standard model like the SPS etc.

I am grateful for all your input and I am more confident because of it. :D

.50bmg would be the only 1000yd "hunting" round I'd consider. Even then 1000yds is 700yds further than my cut off range for game of 300yds.

Hunting rifles tend to be light, target rifles tend to be heavy. Lots of reasons for that.

Buy a used hunting rifle in medium caliber and learn how to sneak up close to game. Then buy a heavy barrel varmint gun for long range targets...oh and varmints.

The longest range I've shot at is 600yds. I've done it with several different guns and I've had fun with each. By far the most fun was with a Sharps paper cutter in .54.

If you want to see the point of impact at 1000 yds, may I suggest to you that you mount and entry level telescope for astronomy. It will be about x150.
