Long range target rifle

IBS 1000 yard record, 5 shots 1.397"

NBRSA, 5 shots 1.473"

One of these days, all five shot's variables will cancel each other out exactly and their group will be 0.000".

I'm a bit surprised that that sub-3" (10-shot) heavy rifle record didn't come from a guy shooting a .308 Baer or similar. Impressive from a .300 WSM.

Casual Long Range

I have just read this thread and I also thinking along the same lines.

I would like to get back into shooting long range. Just bought a Remington 700 VLS heavy (26") Barrel Varminter with a laminated stock in .22-250. Will shot that probably to 300 yards and for an occasional wood chuck.

I never owned a Remington CDL and would like to have one. With a 24" Barrel only available, I was thinking, .25-06 and possibly the .243 or .270. I no longer want to shoot a magnum.

I would be happy getting 5 shots into a 9" Pie Pan out at 1000 yards, would the CDL be capable of that?

Thanks for your suggestions.

No, I don't think so.

With the best reloads possible, that rifle might keep 5 shots fired in 5 minutes inside 25 inches at 1000 yards with the action epoxy bedded and barrel free floated. That's due to the barrel; not the action, stock nor sights.

The .308 Win. chambering's best for long range accuracy with that rifle. Much easier to reload accurately for as well as having good commercial match ammo available.

Few, if any, factory rifles picked at random will shoot that well. Savage has some that'll come close and 1 or 2 that might do it. But only with the best reloads possible.

There's not any significant difference across several 24, 26, 28 and 30 caliber cartridges used in long range competition. They all will shoot under 6 to 7 inches at 1000 yards in good conditions with proper reloads shot from well built rifles. And occasionally, they put a really tiny one down range that gets everyone's attention. Doesn't matter that the tiniest groups come from all the variables pretty much cancelling each other out. And the biggest ones happen when all those variables add up in one direction. Both happen at about the same frequency.

It's possible but not probable, for all the reasons that Bart stated. However, with one of the Savage target rifles (30" barrels) you might have a better chance. The 1k yards goal is more of a journey than a destination.

Long Range Shooting

Thanks Guys, I have never thought much of Savage Arms, but then again I have not been into rifle shooting for some time. I might just start a build project after all.

Best , Bob

Big Mistake there- Most accurate out the box rifles made. I have the 6MMBR and 1000 yards is not a issue at all with it. A 9 inch target would be very very easy to hit. Might even set your sights higher than that. I go out with the 8 inch targets and can keep all shots in that and lots inside the 5 inch mark. And I am just a rookie

+1

If you get to try one with the Accutrigger and take one shot with good ammo, you won't believe your eyes.
