long-gun storage etiquette

I am 65 now and when I was 14 I took a Hunter Safety Course mandated by the state and The butt up or horizontal storage was taught there also. However I was also a military armorer and all our weapons were stored butt down. I store the weapons on my safe butt down but I do not drown them in oil or solvents. So there is validity to the posters statement. Carpet on the floor of the safe will protect the crown.

I was taught about that in gunsmithing school ! And yes I've made butt stocks for double barrel sidelock shotguns because the original was rotted out.
Just because you never heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist !:p

Muzzle down if you store your guns assembled - it does allow the oils to migrate downward - as to protecting the muzzle, MY safe has a cushioned floor.

If you remove the bolts and have plastic stocks, the issue is not as critical

I'm enough of a klutz that I would drop a gun trying to store it muzzle down. Too much risk for crown damage for me. I wipe the things down with an oily rag, how much oil can really accumulate? I usually use high tech gun grease on actions. As long as temperatures remain reasonable, I can't see that getting thin enough to run.
