At a later time, you may want to get a slug barrel with sights.

I think I know where this comes from. In Hollywood movies where a pump scattergun is prominent, the slide is gratuitously racked for effect 95% of the time, thus making the bad guys wet their pants immediately.

In real life, the intelligent bad guy not only now knows exactly where you are, he also knows you've just wasted a round.

Heh. The only time I ever racked a shotgun "for cause", there was an instant exodus. So, 100%. :D:D:D

It should be fairly obvious that "light and handy" relates to home defense as well as hunting in thick cover.

But you go with what you have, in part as a function of primary intended use and the size of one's billfold.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Our home defense plan is to barricade and cover the the door with a 12 gauge while talking to the 911 operator on the cell phone. It's not likely an intruder will get much past the door.

I won't go rooting around the house if I suspect someone is there to do me harm so barrel length doesn't make a lot of difference but mine wears a 20" slug barrel with rifle sights at home.
 
I didn't see anyone following the advise of our esteemed vice pres. Joe biden; just take your shotgun out on your back deck and fire off all your ammo into the air, and hope that scares the dad guys off. That way it doesn't matter so much how long your barrel is. My wife and I have been practicing that drill since old joe proposed it. we go through a box of shells a week, now if I can just get her to sweep up all the hulls.;)

If you don't need to cross your home then don't. The only reason I can see is if I have another family member somewhere inside the house. Otherwise clearing the house is the cops job. If they haul off your T.V. or your computer who cares. It's a whole lot better that you don't shoot someone over material goods.
 
I'd be willin to bet that more BG's have been "stopped" with good ol' birdguns than with dedicated defense guns but that neither here not there. Of coarse shorter guns are better in tight places, only makes sense. But not only for the reasons already pointed out. Shorter guns, whether they be rifles or shotguns, plain and simply handle quicker. It's hard to believe how an inch or two, let alone ten, off the barrel can change the handling of a gun but it is leaps and bounds.
 
Any gun will work for home defense, but, and there always is a but in life, some work better than others. I would not worry about the barrel too much, if you are doing defensive stuff, and leave the house clearing to the cops! You can always buy another tv!!!:eek:
 
It depends on where you live. If you live in Joysey or NY, Mass, Conn etc chances are you are gonna get charged even if they are there with flame throwers, bombs, chainsaws, machineguns etc.

Around here in South Carolina there has been a couple home invasions in last year or so and when deputies got there they found the perps dead. No charges filed.

You can pretty well figure if you live in a state that votes democrat you are gonna be seen as a war monger or some other thing like a church goer etc and they will come after you.

A handgun regardless of caliber cannot be depended up to take bad guys down immediately even with a lethal hit. A shotgun is best indoors followed by a 30 cal rifle and I don't mean M1 Carbine but a real 30 cal like 30.06, 308 etc. I am not aware of anyone that survived a thoracic cavity solid hit and lived to tell the tale.

I just remembered some advise I got from a couple NY cops who I was in Smith & Wesson Armorer's School with 30 years ago. I was joking around with them and told them when I went to the city I carried a 25 auto and they said basically, "If you use it don't hang around till we get there because if you do you will deserve what you get." They went on to explain they find about 50 people a day dead in NYC and it is just another form to fill out unless some jerk is standing there crying saying he did it.

Heh, your cop friends must have come from Chicago 'cause they used to tell me the same dang thing about 25 years ago when I was still living there. ;)
