live 8 - concerts

Did any of you catch the live 8 concerts this past weekend? It was a free concert in a bunch of cities from Philly to London. As normal it was a pushed by the liberal side as a great and needed issue. The idea is to get all the citizens to push the governments of the rich/big 8 countries to give tons of money to Africa. What the show didn't tell us is how much money just the U.S. has passed to Africa since the early 60's. The facts of how much we have given and what we continue to do is mind blowing. The part of helping the world isn't my problem here. The problem I have is what has been done with the billions given in the past? Very little is the true answer. War lords, criminals and so called government officials have all mistreated the funds they received from a very fair and generous world. Did the starved and needing children get much if any of the offerings......No, the UN has estimated that much of the money has never saw the people it was given for.
I might sound cold and unconcerned which isn't the fact at all. I just know that my wallet is light in cash. That which is extra will only be donated to local folks in need. I think charity is best when control and action is local and local offerings stay local. Just my 2 cents to each his/her own.

Handy please.......continue to read on down........ I'll explain my view a little more...

Actually, the goal of Live 8 is NOT to raise money or force anyone to spend money. The previous live aid concerts raised money independantly, only to see the money squandered by corrupt African governments. Due to that experience, the organizers have changed the emphasis of the concert to using public interest to leverage western governments toward fixing those corruption problems so something can actually get done.

Given that, I don't understand your objection. Live Aid has never spent any tax money.

im all for the concerts if they raised awareness and some money, but most of the money raised if any as a result of the concerts will never reach its intended destination.

i read where David Gilmour from pink floyd (whom i like alot) was quoted as saying that the United States needs to do more. well Dave, how many of your millions have you donated to the cause?

i heard on the radio today that we have given 15 times more money towards world hunger problems than has the other G8 nations COMBINED.

i think its time that the U.S. stops trying to be the worlds caretaker, they dont appreciate it anyways. no matter what we do, its never enough.

spend those billions and make things better for Americans.

But, like I already said, Live 8 is NOT a call for using more money.

Why is that so hard to understand?

Must disagree. Live 8 is MAINLY about the forgiving of debts owed by African governments to various world institutions. In addition, they call for additional taxes to be paid by citizens of various nations and given directly to current government leaders. In this instance read USA. In the last 4 decades the USA has GIVEN in foreign aid to african nations over 645 BILLION dollars. Where has the money gone? Who knows. African nations don't need handouts, they need to be free from socialistic, despotic rulers. Give African nations freedom as the Americans enjoy it and stand back. The entire continent would be an economic power house. Freedom and a fair share of the generated profits under a capitolistic, economy driven system and the African nations won't need one bit of help from anyone. They just might be at the head of the parade.

raising some money is absolutely a part of it, hence the DVD out in nov. at a retailer near you. certainly a part of the proceeds will allegedly go towards world hunger charities, so raising money IS a part of it.

whats so hard to understand?

Raising money is always part of it. Don't kid yourself otherwise. Whether it's under the cloak of "forgiving of debts owed by African governments to various world institutions", or any other BS front.

And what will forgiving debt (which is not being repaid anyway) going to do???

This Live 8 was about "raising awareness" - their words, not mine.

"Call now with your donation of awareness. It can be a simple sigh, or a complete epiphany. Call now, operators are standing by."

Handy

What did you think the governments would get the money from to send on along to Africa? I think the governments tend to get money from the people of the countries they represent. Did I miss something along the way? Last time I checked my tax dollars in one form or another along with yours will be what in the long run gets sent........ ;)

Mustang is right....... Socialism hasn't worked, doesn't work and likely never will work. Remember Somalia incident? Peace keepers were attacked and our special ops guys responded as ordered by Clinton. Things went south real fast and the history lesson is titled "Blackhawk Down". It seems to me that that 650+ billion should have ended up building safe water distribution systems, sewer systems, schools, hospitals, clinics, built manufacture centers to bring employment and stability......the list goes on. By continued support of the old broken (not working method) we continue to do exactly what? I think if we wanted to help them it might be smart to reduce the amount we give. We don't empower or help the system by continued patching........ It needs an enema........total clean out and up.....again that's the harsh way I see it........just my view point.

What irritates me most is that these self-appointed and egotistical minstrels and other 'celebrities' think that the rest of the World should listen to them. If they are fair dinkum then let them run their own aid foundation, funded by contributions from their own members. And, let them get hands on in the administration and delivery of the aid. All they do is get up on the stage and blow off for an hour or two and that's it. 'We've done the singing and dancing, now it's up to the rest of you to do the years of hard slog.'

I think they are all crap.

Blue......

You and me both............... ;)

Sir Paul is an entertainer and that is all I see him as.......... I guess a lot of folks think an entertainer is a team leader to God or something. Now, to be fair anything and everything he and his singing, dance and actor groups has done to a positive nature, I tip my hat.......

Why is it Hollywood and the world that lives on it's energy gets the ego that makes them think every word they mutter is being listened to? I for one can make my own mind up with no help from them. I'm afraid many sheep in the pasture would follow Hollywoods crew off a cliff......with smiles on faces all the way to the bottom.... ;) It's not natural but it's daily..........

Handy,

The live 8 was about trying to guilt nations into throwing more money at a country that has more natural resources then most, but they are lead by tin pot dictators.

You did notice that South Africa went straight downhill when Mandela took over and ousted the Dutch. Not to even mention Mugabe (I'm not worried about spelling their names right, they don't deserve that type of respect).

How many times did they mention that America doesn't pull their "fair share" when we've given how much compared to others? It was a hate America and for America to send more money. Dude, where do you think the government gets money? From us Taxpayers, so what was this, us taxpayers are tight asses and we don't give enough.

I'm sorry, I'm going to disagree with you on this one. Why should I have to pay for the africans sexual immorities that I now need to give money for the HIV/Aids cocktails? Why should I pay because they murder their own and then kill the farmers that actually grew the food so they wouldn't starve? Why should I pay for each kid that they pop out because they have kids but can't support them?

Why do I have to pay for their sins and immorality? Tell me, why? I don't care, they made their bed, let them lie in it. This may sound cruel and I look like a bastard, but hell man, I have to pay for my own medical, I have to pay for my own prescriptions, I have to pay for my own way in life. I don't get any money from anyone, as a matter of fact it's taken from me to support these deadbeats.

The next time that I see some actor/actress/music star walking in the streets or gutters of some african area, and they have a gucci suit/clothes, a rolex, and leather shoes that would take a normal American to pay a years pay for, and then demand that we're not giving enough, I hope the kid :barf: 's on them because what they have on will raise that one family into upper class in that country.

Why don't they lead by example and give all their money and things up before they try to guilt America into doing it for them.

Wayne

/sorry

ABC News this morning...

They got good ole Stephenopolis on to tell us how the folks in Europe hate our president. He said the Brits young are 7 out of 10, Germans young 8 out 10 and the French are said 9 out of 10. I love these nice little numbers. No information on who, age, type of wealth group, special interest, location or any disclaimer info on the so called statistics. If any of the information was real, wouldn't they give some of that info? I guess us morning sheep don't want to know or could even be considered as needing this info to make a conclusion on our own. They (media) continue the downward plunge. :D Even if all the crap they try feeding us was true, should we start to care? I am one of millions of Americans who don't care what feelings the young teens of Europe have. How silly for such rant to make the national and world news. It just gets to be more entertaining each day I listen and turn it on. :barf:

"It was designed to get out the message to the leaders of the world" Mr. Gibson said so......... Well, this isn't what they said ten minutes ago. Which way is it. What is the message and who was it for? I think the free music was just special and great. Oh, George luney Kluney Duney is now telling us how Bono and all the other big names are getting this going :barf:

He even said "We don't know what this will end up as"

Robin Roberts did it......."She said you know a lot of people think money will end up in the wrong hands"......... George said he feels they (who is they) will follow up on this.......... :barf: Yep, George save the world......

In the last 4 decades the USA has GIVEN in foreign aid to african nations over 645 BILLION dollars.

The US could have gone to Mars 64 times with that by Dr. Robert Zubrin's thinking and planning (10 B$), once with Nasa's (550 B$).

:barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf:

most of it was crap. madonna? :barf:

pink floyd was smoking though, maybe waters and gilmour can get along well enough for a tour in the future. LOTS of money to be made there boys.

Enjoy the concerts. How often does Pink Floyd play?

The thing I can't understand, is how dumb these people can get. One was saying on TV. that we need to drop import tariffs from Africa so the farmers can make more money and not starve  (if a farmer is starving, should he be exporting his crop?)

Yep,

If the Hollywooders would get together and have an hour long education class on the thought of the week they might sound real and normal and almost sorta ;) like us........... Well, that is a stretch, I know.

A few do get details and get educated but not many speak like they have any real clue or information on the cause....
