light loads for deer

My 9YO Granddaughter tried out her new 300AAC a couple of days ago .308 125 grainers @ 2200 fps. Even that rocked her pretty hard.
I've shot the 7mm08 some and wouldn't put my Grandkids behind one loaded with 120 grainers @ 2600FPS.
A 243 with 85 grainers @ 2400-2500 would be the limit IMHO.

I download 7-08 to 7Mm BR velocity’s with partitions for hogs and I have liked a number of deer with the 7mm BR. Low recoil and it does the job.

OP is nearly a year old.
It's more about a 7 year old's attention span. A kid that young isn't going to be able to sit in a blind for long before he gets cold/bored/hungry, etc.

I'm looking to make a light load for youth hunters.

Depending on age and size:

1) .22 long rifle to start

as they get older:

2) .22 Hornet for center fire introduction (H&R single shot good starter)

as they get older:

3) .243 Win. with about 47 grains of 4831 when he/she is large enough.

My son was 12 years old before he could handle the .243 without a recoil flinch.

Imo, only your .243 is good for such a young kid. That said, a poorly fitted rifle hurts. At a bench, at 13, my shoulder broke out with bleeding capillaries.

Take the effort to fit it with a recoil pad to spread the impact out. Buy a past pad. Do whatever it takes to minimize recoil even further.

Your chosen load is great.

That’s funny, just a couple of months ago I was talked into going and sitting in a stand by a 6 year old that wanted to see a deer.

About 15-20 minutes into it I told her we might as well get out because there was no way anything would be within a 1/4 mile radius with all the racket she was making. As soon as the words left my mouth she yelled “look a deer!” and sure enough it had walked right by us from behind, followed by about 6 more....

Don't know of any State that allows a child of 7 to openly hunt/shoot Big Game Animals even under adult supervision.
In my State a child has to enroll in a legitimate Gun Safety Course before their allowed to hunt Big Game. As early as 11 yrs old to attend such a class but the Certificate does not become valid until the child turns 12 years of age. Younger children than 12 yrs old can watch the harvest of a animal by a licensed hunter but are not allowed to harvest a big game animal what-so-ever.

I've witnessed a 10 yr old un-licensed child during deer season get caught shouldering his fathers unloaded rifle as he & Father both walked home together on a county gravel road one afternoon. Stopped by a Game Warden and ticketed for the offense the Father was. The father pleaded with the Game Warden not to confiscate his rifle. Which the warden intended on (so I believe) but kindly changed his mind when he observed how distressed the boy and Father had become with such a disheartening action.
