Liberalcrats want more gas taxes, higher gas prices

Once again, we see the Liberal/Democrat's true colors, compliments of Ann Coulter...

It's Hard Out Here for a Pump

by Ann Coulter

I would be more interested in what the Democrats had to say about high gas prices if these were not the same people who refused to let us drill for oil in Alaska, imposed massive restrictions on building new refineries, and who shut down the development of nuclear power in this country decades ago.

But it's too much having to watch Democrats wail about the awful calamity to poor working families of having to pay high gas prices.

Imposing punitive taxation on gasoline to force people to ride bicycles has been one of the left's main policy goals for years.

For decades Democrats have been trying to raise the price of gasoline so that the working class will stop their infernal car-driving and start riding on buses where they belong, while liberals ride in Gulfstream jets.

The last time the Democrats controlled the House, the Senate and the presidency was in 1993. Immediately after trying to put gays in the military and socialize all health care, Clinton's next order of business was to propose an energy tax on all fuels, including a 26-cent tax on gas. I think the bill was called "putting people first in line at the bus station." This is the Democratic Party. That's their program.

Al Gore defended the gas tax, vowing that it was "absolutely not coming out" of the energy bill regardless of "how much trouble it causes the entire package."

And mind you, this was before we knew Gore was clinically insane. Back then we thought he was just a double-talking stuffed shirt who seemed kind of gay. The important thing was to force Americans to stop their infernal car-driving, no matter how much it cost.

Democrats in Congress promptly introduced an "energy bill" that would put an additional 25-cent-a-gallon tax on gasoline to stop "global warming," an atmospheric phenomenon supposedly aggravated by frivolous human activities such as commerce, travel and food production.

Democratic House Speaker Tom Foley endorsed the proposal on "Charlie Rose," saying: "I'd have a five-cent increase every year for five years. ... But that's not going to happen ... because we've got people who fret and worry that one- or two-tenths of a cent of a gasoline tax is going to cause some revolution at home." So in Tom Foley's universe, two-tenths of a cent is the same as a quarter -- another testimonial to the American public educational system.

The Democrats' proposed gas tax did cause a revolution at home, and consequently the Democrats were able to sneak through only an additional 4.3-cent federal tax on gasoline. After tut-tutting the idea that voters would object if the Democrats attempted a huge gas tax increase, Speaker Tom Foley soon became former speaker, and indeed former Congressman Tom Foley.

Gary Hart, another whimsical demonstration of what Democrats think a president should be like, said at the time, "I certainly favor consumption taxes, particularly on energy." Then there's John Kerry, who favored a 50-cent increase in the gas tax in 1994. If he were a rap artist, Kerry's stage name would be "Fifty Cent a Gallon."

Last year, a couple of green "climatologists" at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign were back at it in the journal Science, wheeling out their proposal for a 25-cent-a-gallon tax on gasoline as an "insurance policy" against global warming.

Just two months ago, we were being confidently told -- on the basis of a New York Times/CBS News poll, so it must be true -- that "Americans might OK a gasoline tax hike if it reduced global warming or lessened U.S. dependence on foreign oil." (This poll was wedged in among the 29 polls claiming Americans think we're losing the war in Iraq.) Other results from the Times' "meaningless polls" section: Americans might "OK" a Dennis Kucinich presidency if it meant free ice cream every Tuesday.

How many times do Democrats have to tell us they want to raise the price of gas for the average American before the average American believes them? Is it more or less than the number of times Democrats tell us they want to surrender in the war on terrorism?

It's as if a switch goes off in people's brains telling them: The Democrats can't be saying they want to destroy the lives of people who drive cars because my father was a Democrat, and the Democrats can't be this stupid!

The Democrats' only objection to current gas prices is that the federal government's cut is a mere 18.4 cents a gallon. States like New York get another 44 cents per gallon in taxes. The Democratic brain processes the fact that "big oil companies" get nearly 9 cents a gallon and thinks: WE SHOULD HAVE ALL THAT MONEY!

When the free market does the exact thing liberals have been itching to do through taxation, they pretend to be appalled by high gas prices, hoping the public will forget that high gas prices are part of their agenda.

Known it for years. That could have been one of many nails in Kerry's coffin. He voted to raise the gas tax something like five times. Unfourtuneately the great unwashed masses think that the oil companies are the only ones gouging and that they are in bed with the oil companines, while their demonrat canidates would never take campain contributions from the big bad oil companies. No one wants to mention that klinton wanted to hop into bed with the Taliban to build an oil pipeline.

Sorry, You have no friends in Washington

Sad to burst your bubble but the Donkeys and the Elephants are so busy filling their own pockets and portfolios that hot air is all you are gonna get except higher prices on motorfuel and everything else that depends upon transportation to get to you. Including of course groceries, natural gas, LP gas, electricity and the list is endless.

You can blame the damned arabs, Big Oil, the screaming, yelling idiots on Wall St. betting on crude oil futures, and Bush but right now it seems the American Oil companies raise prices because they are getting by with it.

Right now is a wonderful time to drop State and Federal taxes on motor fuel as it will ease the pain to we consumers and deplete the funds the toadies in Washington and our States have to waste, therefore they will become more concerned. But it won't happen.

I was trying to explain a person today how gas taxes causes everything to go up ....from groceries to new houses...and even when your friendly neighborhood plummer or arborist or landscape professional...even guns. All things depend on transportion therefore all things go up when you mess with fuel. Anyway...his eyes just glazed over.

Thank you steelheart:)

Ann tells it like it is, the government digs alot deeper into pockets than any oil company.

Most Americans will believe their local newspaper first.
Which, along with the liberals is slowly convincing people it's the evil oil companies, and you know what else? What? That GWB is a oil man too!

We all pay a heavy state and federal tax on top of each gallon of gas. How much more tax do we pay under that for business, corporate, transportation, and who knows how many other taxes the liberals snuk in to one gallon of gas. The person holding the pump handle pays for all of these hidden taxes.

The liberals want to add more taxes, taxes, taxes, taxes, and this will bring down prices. Plus, their gonna protect you and me from those big mean capitalists.

Why do all you folks listen to the hot air people, liberal or conservative? Ann is out for what Ann can make stirring the pot. Ann is an ovepaid mouthpiece like the rest of them.

I do know that Congress voted to give the Oil Industry major tax breaks and that the oil industy had been given authority to drill on public land without paying any royalties. Thats land that all of us owns.

I dont think the Oil Companies are good corporate citizens...

I don't think liberal politicians are very good American citizens.

It's simple, the government taxes the life out of people, and rakes in far more money than the oil co. do.

Face the facts, the DEMOCRATS want more and more taxes.

Ultimately, those taxes will come from YOUR pocket.

Grab your wallet folks, the TAXOCRATS are on the way!

any leader who looks at taxes as a means to gain more political power rather than the means to pay for the country's needs is a vile American..

truth is there is too much of this in both parties...the Democrats do it more often and are more public about it..elepahnts and jack-asses are running our country...

Nancy Palosie was somehow shown on FNC giving a speech on raising taxes on the oil companies, this is going to help us?

When ever I hear her talk I develope strees factures in my skull. These lib/dems seem to think any problem can be fixed with higher taxes.

I dont think any party has good ideas right now....

I know you guys think Jimmah Carter was the biggest Hayseed Democratic Liberal to come down the pike.

July 15, 1979 Speech........almost 27 years ago

Point one: I am tonight setting a clear goal for the energy policy of the United States. Beginning this moment, this nation will never use more foreign oil than we did in 1977 -- never. From now on, every new addition to our demand for energy will be met from our own production and our own conservation. The generation-long growth in our dependence on foreign oil will be stopped dead in its tracks right now and then reversed as we move through the 1980s, for I am tonight setting the further goal of cutting our dependence on foreign oil by one-half by the end of the next decade -- a saving of over 4-1/2 million barrels of imported oil per day.

Point two: To ensure that we meet these targets, I will use my presidential authority to set import quotas. I'm announcing tonight that for 1979 and 1980, I will forbid the entry into this country of one drop of foreign oil more than these goals allow. These quotas will ensure a reduction in imports even below the ambitious levels we set at the recent Tokyo summit.

Point three: To give us energy security, I am asking for the most massive peacetime commitment of funds and resources in our nation's history to develop America's own alternative sources of fuel -- from coal, from oil shale, from plant products for gasohol, from unconventional gas, from the sun.

I propose the creation of an energy security corporation to lead this effort to replace 2-1/2 million barrels of imported oil per day by 1990. The corporation I will issue up to $5 billion in energy bonds, and I especially want them to be in small denominations so that average Americans can invest directly in America's energy security.

Just as a similar synthetic rubber corporation helped us win World War II, so will we mobilize American determination and ability to win the energy war. Moreover, I will soon submit legislation to Congress calling for the creation of this nation's first solar bank, which will help us achieve the crucial goal of 20 percent of our energy coming from solar power by the year 2000.

These efforts will cost money, a lot of money, and that is why Congress must enact the windfall profits tax without delay. It will be money well spent. Unlike the billions of dollars that we ship to foreign countries to pay for foreign oil, these funds will be paid by Americans to Americans. These funds will go to fight, not to increase, inflation and unemployment.

Point four: I'm asking Congress to mandate, to require as a matter of law, that our nation's utility companies cut their massive use of oil by 50 percent within the next decade and switch to other fuels, especially coal, our most abundant energy source.

Point five: To make absolutely certain that nothing stands in the way of achieving these goals, I will urge Congress to create an energy mobilization board which, like the War Production Board in World War II, will have the responsibility and authority to cut through the red tape, the delays, and the endless roadblocks to completing key energy projects.

We will protect our environment. But when this nation critically needs a refinery or a pipeline, we will build it.

Point six: I'm proposing a bold conservation program to involve every state, county, and city and every average American in our energy battle. This effort will permit you to build conservation into your homes and your lives at a cost you can afford.

I ask Congress to give me authority for mandatory conservation and for standby gasoline rationing. To further conserve energy, I'm proposing tonight an extra $10 billion over the next decade to strengthen our public transportation systems. And I'm asking you for your good and for your nation's security to take no unnecessary trips, to use carpools or public transportation whenever you can, to park your car one extra day per week, to obey the speed limit, and to set your thermostats to save fuel. Every act of energy conservation like this is more than just common sense -- I tell you it is an act of patriotism.

Our nation must be fair to the poorest among us, so we will increase aid to needy Americans to cope with rising energy prices. We often think of conservation only in terms of sacrifice. In fact, it is the most painless and immediate way of rebuilding our nation's strength. Every gallon of oil each one of us saves is a new form of production. It gives us more freedom, more confidence, that much more control over our own lives.

Seems like this liberal Democrat had a good plan.

Wondering if Jimmah is havin the last laugh... :(

Jimmy blocked the expasion of our own oil production, and left the economy broken when he was fired.

Steelheart, I see today on fnc the liberal party blocked yet AGAIN expanding oil refinment here at home.

And they want to raise taxes on top of it

Face the facts, the DEMOCRATS want more and more taxes.

Remember this ------> "Read my lips: no new taxes!!"......I wonder who said that back on August 18, 1988???

Must've been a dirty tax-raising Democrat.

At least he tried, the guy was surrounded by angry taxocrats

This is 2006 now, 1988 was awhile ago. We need to stop the taxocrats now.

So I won't bring up Bill Stalin Clinton's (D) LARGEST federal tax increase or gun ban in history.

*Sigh* the solution is so simple, we have had it for years, and yet we don't use it. (Thanks alot Carter:mad: ) Small Scale Breeder reactors, or "Fast Reactor".

A Breeder reactor turns normaly useless U-238 into usefull Pu-239 by bombarding it with nutrons. The U-238 in the reactor needs to be reprocessed to become usefull as fuel and if the reprocessing facility is on site then no radioactive material has to leave the site. An even better bonus is that over time, the plutonium is "burned up" into lighter isotopes that have half lives of only a few hundred years at most. This waste is useless for weapons and would be very easy to contain for the relativly short period of time needed for it to decay to harmless levels. Modern reactors are designed much better so we don't have another TMI. Sure a failure might make a mess, but it will be contained and relativly "easy" to clean up.

We then use the cheap electricity from the breeder reactors to make hydrogen that we can then use a a fuel. That or use it for any number of ways that we can store energy for cars. (BioDiesel, biomass, ethanol, whatever.)

The only problem with this is that Environment nuts would go crazy about how we are going to end the world, etc. Not to mention the evil "P" word. Of course to these people, Coal and oil are such better alternatives. Nuclear power is only as dangerous as you let it be.

Carter made his first energy speech in 1977. He predicted this moment would come and it did.......you can call him lame but he was right.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/carter/filmmore/ps_energy.html

some more reading for you

http://www.hubbertpeak.com/hubbert/

This was done in 1956

http://www.hubbertpeak.com/hubbert/1956/1956.pdf

so how can you blame Carter for the decrease in oil production? Dr. Hubbert predicted the decrease in 1956.

The first act of the Reagan/Bush administration was to take the solar panels off the White House and reverse many of Carters energy inititives.

around 1979 the Bin laden family's US Rep was bailing out a company called Arbusto....

So after retrospect and some thinking and knowing that a solution was there I am going to stop blaming the oil companies and politicians and blame the American people.

If we had implemeted Carters proposals we might not be in this mess now where some folks are having to decide upon basic neccisities and fuel. The middle east oil countries were no fools....after Carter set forth his initiatives he was bad for thier business..so they sucked in the American people and the got in the politicians pockets....

Now they have us by the short and curlies...

Our last national energy bill included 8 billion in tax breaks for oil companies...
wonder what energy saving and production inititives it included.

So time for me to quit whining and pay the piper.

As is the case in nearly all things:

Republicans provide a few real solutions, but bring a few problems.

Communists (AKA "democrats") provide no real solutions, but bring 100,000 problems. Even their pro-privacy arguments are double-talk, because they only want to protect you from your fellow commoner--not from Big Brother.

And the real conservatives and libertarians are left shaking their heads, wondering if the rest of the country will ever wake up. For my part, I'm starting to become highly skeptical.

The tables have turned, folks.

There is no doubt whatsoever that a major sea-change has taken place in the last 6-10 years, in that there is no longer a distinction as there once was, of the Repubs being the party of lower taxes/smaller gov't, and the Dems being the party of higher taxes/ more gov't. Shrub and the current Congresscritter crop changed all that. It was once quite fair and appropriate to refer to Dems as "taxocrats". But no one but no one has seen the likes of big spenders like the Repubs that have controlled the (a) House, AND (b) Senate, AND (presidency) for 6 years, during which time NON-military, NON-entitlement spending has increased at a rate higher than at any time since LBJ's great society era. Again, that's:

-Non-entitlement (not counting SS, SSI, Medicare, Medicaid, Etc.
-Non-military/defense (not counting all the billions upon billions for Shrub's war in Iraq and other justified military actions, like Afghanistan)

Not counting those two, other spending is the highest it's been as a percent of GDP, since LBJ. The budget deficit is enormous, and the national debt is at an all-time high, due to the extraordinary pork the Repubs have been handing themselves out since this feeding frenzy began back in '00. There is NO DOUBT that there are NO SPENDERS who saddle our children and grandchilden with backbreaking debt like REPUBLICAN SPENDERS!

It is no longer apt to label the Dems as the taxocrats. It is instead far more approriate, given the last 10 years, to label the Republicans as the "tax & spend" party, because the facts simply bear that out. The federal budget has not been balanced since Clinton was in office.

Shrub has turned me from someone who was in essence a Republican who would try to make the party more 1st and 4th amendment friendly, into someone who is in essence a Democrat who would/will try to make the party more pro-gun freedom friendly. BushCo sucks perspiring, follicle-laden gonads.

And Ann Coulter is a blowhard moron.

into someone who is in essence a Democrat who would/will try to make the party more pro-gun freedom friendly.
Citizen disarmament is the leftist/Democrat/socialist holy grail. If you think they are going to forsake that because of you or anyone else, you are delusional.
