And the Answer Is:

"How can those optics mounted on the gas tube and receiver covers possibly hold a solid zero?
I can't see it... " Well, a lot has happened in the last few years. First of all, Ultimak makes the gas tube mount, and it CLAMPS TO THE BARREL. It is n't going anywhere.:D Very solid. Number 2: The Texas Weapons Systems mount is redesigned, and is now a solid aluminum, milled, dust cover mount that is very solid, bracketed fore and aft, and has a replacement rear release that is tighter than the issue lug. I recently shot a 2-3" group at 200 yards with my AK74 (5.45x39). I also have an Ultimak on my 7.62, but the optic is a Zeiss, and made more for fast & close combat use. It is still rigid as hell.

My Bulgarian AK74 was built with a new condition, unused kit, and my brother parkerized and painted (Norrell)the receiver to match. With the swapped US parts (including the Ironwood stocks), I have about $650-$675 in it, without the TWS mount and Leupold scope.

No handloading for the 5.45. The reason I got it was the fantastic price for the Russian surplus ammo. It can stlll be had for 12-13 cents around, in 2160 round cases. What you'll spend for a good gun, you'll save in the long run by not having to load, or buy 30-50 cent a round for comparable 7.62 or .223ammo.
