Let's discuss the 25-06

Lets not get our shorts in a bind. Really, you could shoot everything from ground hogs to elephants with an ought-06, but why? Does a politician have only one wife, or an actor have only one girlfriend, or your favorite soda fountain have only one flavor milkshake ... NO! Choice is American!

Not liking the 25'06 is extreme, commie behavior ... come now! The 25 strikes like lightning; my wife dropped some nice Mule deer with hers, and they barely took another step!

Well comrad, that must make me a commie. I would say I am more ambivalant to the 25-06 than not like it. I like the 243 because it's faster and the 270 for it's longer range. I also disagree with GeauxTide, the 6.8 replaces the 243 and 270 not the 6.5, but that's in an auto-loader (AR).

Besides, why have only one rifle when you could own two? (LOL)

Im fortunate to live in an area where the deer are abundant and the seasons are long. We've been shooting them for a month with a depredation permits. So I get to try out guns and loads on deer pretty much year round. Without a doubt the 25-06 is as good of a cartridge as Ive used. It hits with much more authority than the 243 and 260, IMO. Ive had alot more bangflops on deer and pigs with a 25-06 than a 260. The 243 cant carry the 25-06's jockstrap. The 6.5's are very impressive on paper but only average in the field. If I was primarily a varmint hunter that occasionally deer hunts I might choose a 243. Less propellant usage and slightly less recoil in my experience.

Besides, if we only had a handful of calibers, life would be less interesting, we would have fewer excuses to buy a new rifle, and we would have less to argue about.

Thanks for agreeing with me only in different words.
I know, my attitude is no fun. I tend to be practical in choice of modern firearms.
Now, if you look at my traditional style muzzle loaders..........
Never heard of practical. ;)
I have suppository guns but traditional muzzle loaders are my real passion.

Great. Now we're heading back to the "one gun arsenal" type of threads. I'll just shoot whistle pigs with my .300 Weatherby and downloaded 110 gr. pills, then switch to IMR 7828 or H1000 and the 200 gr. Spitzer for everything else, right? It'll be hard to kill a gray squirrel and still eat it like that, but who knows? Get a grip.....................................................<7><)))))))))))))))
