Less Than Lethal Carry

I always carry OC, especially when I have a gun. I do not want my only option to be lethal force. If someone comes at you with no weapon, you sure don't want to pull a pistol, but you also do not want to wrestle with him/her either. The last thing I want is for someone to get my gun, which is a very real possibility if you are fighting. OC gives you a less than lethal alternative. Hopefully it does it's job and you will not have to use lethal force, but if it does not stop the person, it gives you a more legitimate reason for increasing your use of force. If you do have to shoot someone, it looks much better in court if you can prove that you did everything you could to avoid it. I worked at a state maximum security prison that used plenty of OC. It works a majority of the time, escpecially if you get one of the better brands. I have never seen Punch II fail, and I have been hit with it myself. I have faith that it is going to work, and carry it daily.

I carry 10% OC made by Defense Technology. I carry a large one in my vest pocket, I have another large one in my desk, and a couple of smaller ones that are rather unobtrusive for off duty. If someone opts to avoid any type of less than lethal devices I guess that's their option. I personally try to avoid gun play like the friggen bubonic plague. If I feel a situation could be handled with deploying the OC that is exactley what I will do. If I have to use my weapon, well, so be it. Each situation is different.

I've had years of kick boxing, judo and aikido... and I always carry a very small cylinder of spray and a firearm. On the other hand my wife refuses to carry a firearm. Instead she carries spray that a LE friend gave her. My attitude is that nowadays every situation is a potential lethal situation and that you should gain the upper hand psychologically and physically as soon as humanly possible by whatever responsible means necessary and then extrecate yourself even quicker. You need to make quick decisions that could change your life. Drawing a firearm can either escalate or terminate a situation. If that trigger is pulled you better have good cause.
