LEO use of revolvers in 2015

Our local department has two auxiliaries (part time, semi retired) who still carry nickled Model 19s. The deputy chief carries a model 36 around the station. Rumor has it that it's even loaded sometimes, lol.

Although most departments have gone to semi-autos...

A few allow officers to carry revolvers if used during quals...

A huge number of police still carry a revolver such as a S&W "J-frames" as a backup gun...

When it seemed like everyone was carrrying revolvers I carried a Colt Gold Cup in .45ACP and later 10mm with a Colt Detective Special/Cobra or later a S&W 342 in .38 Special for a back-up and a .25ACP as a second back-up.

The last time I saw a cop with a revolver was about 6 years ago in Chicago. A middle aged officer had a 4" K frame in his holster. I mentioned to him I thought it was cool to see the revolver on duty and he didn't appropriate me talking to him.

Well I'll talk to you Saxonpig. Don't let one jerk Chicago cop ruin my profession for you. There are over 800,000 active duty officers in the United States. I like to talk guns with citizens.

Chicago PD is a different breed. I've ran into quite a few of them as they believe the speed limit doesn't apply to them. Most have been fairly arrogant and give off a sense of entitlement, while a slim few of them have been down to earth and respectful.

Personally, I'd be glad to chat with someone about firearms when I'm on duty. Of course a run of the mill M&P 40 with a TLR-1s on it isn't necessarily conversation worthy, lol.

It's been my experience that many of the large metro cops are pretty arrogant acting. I've had similar experiences with cops from San Francisco and Los Angeles. The officers from New York City and northern New Jersey can be hard as well, but like many folks from that area (this is my personal experience from when I was stationed at Ft. Drum, N.Y.) if you can break the ice with them they tend to be pretty friendly. I like to tell folks that cops that are jerks to them are often jerks to fellow officers as well.

SCHP issues the Glock 22 as a main duty weapon and a j-frame as a backup. I always thought it was the 642 airweight but can't confirm it.

Security officers in Wash, DC use revolvers -- semi-autos are not allowed.

I don't think I've seen a regular LEO carrying a revolver in years. I don't see them making a comeback in that role, although there are many other good uses for them and they have some real advantages.
