Legal Issues

Incursion, I don't know about Texas,But here in PA. my father bought my first handgun for me,it was registered in his name, he owned it.
I could take it to the range unloaded and open on the seat. At 18 I could also get a hunting permit to carry open. That was back in 1974 or 75 I don't remember exactly. It was a Ruger New Model Blackhawk .357 in SS. I still have that gun yet today and will never part with it. I would just check with your local LEO to be sure.
For what its worth :)

Happy Shooting :)

My wife recently bought me a pistol as a gift. When the gun shop owner found out it wasn't for her, I had to come down to the shop and fill out the forms for the transfer myself. But this is California.

Maybe your Dad should "loan" the gun to you after he buys it for himself, and "give" it to you when you turn 21, transferring it if he has to at that time. Until then, be very careful to obey all laws while transporting your Dad's gun to and from the range. Have fun and be safe.

You might try contacting the DA's office in your area. They may be able to answer you questions, but if nothing else, they should be able to direct you to someone who specializes in firearms-related issues.

I live in Michigan and the law here says that anyone eighteen years of age or older can own a hand gun if it was bought through a private purchase, if you buy said gun and it is registered in you name then you can legally buy ammo for it.

My first three handguns my Dad bought with my money, I waited a couple months and reregistered it in my name. Then I went and bought ammo from the store just like anyone else.
