Leaving your gun in the car

I use the Secure-it gun safe in each of my vehicles. I also have a shotgun/rifle safe bolted down in the trunk of one car. It will hold 3 shotguns or rifles.

i HATE leaving my gun in the car! but, sometimes, i really ahve no choice (by law). when i do, depending on where i am, and how long i will be gone, i either put it in a lockbox inside my vehicle, or underneath the seat. obviously, if i am only going to be gone for a few minutes, it goes under the seat, and i lock the car. the problem with the lockbox, is i have it bolted inside the back of the car (where it is hidden from veiw) but i have to get out of the car to put it in there. so if it is a busy place, people get to see me put the gun in the back. i do my best to hide it, but there is only so much you can do. in a perfect world, there would be a place for the lockbox in the front drivers area. but in my vehicle, there isn't.

I have to go onto a military base Mon-Fri and weapons are verbotten there. I have a CCW and I bring my weapon on daily (along with my personal protection blade). I put it in my backpack before I go onto the base. Never had a problem with searches. I know it may seem silly but in the borderland I would rather have to explain a weapons possession to the MPs than to have the MPs visit my widow. Hope this helps.

Someone said it I don't want to wear an empty IWB all day. I'm going to get one of those boxes and stick it in my car. Thanks for you responses.

"I have a heavy Dog Choker Chain and padlock it and the gun around my seat frame. Then stuff the gun under the seat."

Gotta love it. As Hank, Jr. said, "A country boy can survive".:D

Solutions I've seen so far include the standard safes (as other folks have illustrated earlier in this thread) mounted in various locations.

A "laptop" briefcase with a security cable (Screams "take me" as far as I'm concerned)

And then the "hidden in plain sight" method such as a safe mounted inside a fake pizza box (ugly) or the fake "first aid kit" I made for a friend (bolted in place inside his trunk)

(so far nobody has ever noticed or questioned a "first aid kit" with a keylock).

That's not necessarily true. Here in Colorado, the State Attorney General has said that state university property is considered sovereign in terms of letting the school decide whether or not to allow legally concealed weapons. The University of Colorado system has since said even legally carried (CCW) weapons is forbidden. But Colorado State University has decided to allow CCW.

So you may want to double check your state law.

I do have my permit and carrying on campus is prohibited. You can go to parking lot and you must leave your gun in your vehicle. If I could carry at school I would.

I don't have any choice. If I have to go to the Post Office, a posted business or a restaurant with a liquor license, Ohio law requires me to disarm. If I know I have to go some place that's a CPZ, I put my gun in the glove box before I leave. When I get to my destination, I lock the glove box. When I'm ready to leave again, I take the gun out of the glove box and put it back into the holster, or if I'm carrying my Model 36, put pocket holster and all back in my pocket.

I keep a .38 in my glove box 24/7 .. I'm retired, so my car doesn't sit in a parking lot for 8-10 hours a day and at night it's locked in my garage .. when I leave the car, I lock the glovebox and the car ... when I'm out and about, I carry my SD gun with me, and the .38 stays in its gunsock in the car ... I don't worry about theft because I'm never away from the car long enough for someone to boost it ...

The pushbutton and key backup safe are the best answer to the problem. Cable lock to seat frames. Might also consider the new ones that require fingerprint. We have open carry -state line near by requires no gun in vehicle unless secured in a locked container not readily accessible.Often cross the state line traveling to areas in my state. Would not recommend single key lock box. Watched my niece open mother in laws in 3 seconds with a couple of paperclips. I was shocked she said "don't ask":(
