Leaving your gun in the car

When I go to school I am not allowed to carry there. I am allowed to leave my gun in the parking lot in my car. I usually don't even bother because I have to take my IWB holster off my belt etc. Does anybody leave a unsecured firearm in the car? I dont think its a good idea. I know they have safes you can put in your car. Just looking for some thoughts advice.

Hello, VA9mm!

I some times have the same problem, like when I have to enter premises in which firearms carry is restricted.

Luckily, I have a driver to whom I can entrust my carry piece.

You are dead right in saying that leaving an unsecured firearm in a car is definitely a no-no. Considering the high incidence of car thefts in certain areas, you could likely lose your car and your gun(!)

If you drive your self, you are correct in assuming that the best solution would be to have a very discreet safe in the car, securely bolted down to prevent removal and tampering. And a proper alarm/immobilizer system to protect your car.

Hope this helps!

I occassionally will leave my gun in my car unsecured, but I try not to. I just stick it under the driver seat until I return, or in the doorpocket/console/out of sight.

Sometimes there just aren't any other options, atleast not ones that are practical.

If you expect to routinely have to leave it in your car, I would suggest one of the lock boxes you can secure w/ a cable for an easy fix. Not fool-proof, but nothing ever is.

Yes, I will leave a handgun in my car "unsecured", if you define that term as "not locked in a handgun safe or attached by a cable".

I will leave a handgun in my car protected by both the factory alarm system and an Avital Avistart 4400 alarm system.

It will also be "secured" by being hidden in a non-typical location.

As many times as I get in and out of my car everyday, I won't repeatedly lock and unlock it from a car safe or cable, but I will creatively hide it and set the alarm.

When I'm in the car I will have quick access to it.

Sometimes I don't have a choice.
If you are worried about your car getting stolen, it won't really matter if your gun is cable locked-in or in a car safe. If they really want it when they get to where ever they left their bolt cuter it will be unlocked quickly.

Everyone who is in the position of leaving a weapon in their car should check their current state laws. Recently several states have ammended their laws so that if a gun is stolen from you and used in a crime you can be held liable. My home state has done this. If you have to leave it in a vehicle be very careful about how and for how long you do it.

I certainly don't leave a firearm in my car on a regular basis. On occasion, however, I do leave it hidden under a seat while I run inside a school or a courthouse. I don't take a gun if I think I'm going to have to leave it in a car for long periods of time (more than an hour or so).

Just out of curiosity, why do you need to take your holster off to leave your gun in the car? It is easy to put the gun in a gun rug if you are afraid of scratching it up or something.

I keep one in my center console of my truck 24/7. (aside from my CCW) The console doesn't lock but my truck doors do...that's good enough for me. Where I'm at, I'm not worried about anyone breaking into or stealing my truck though.

I was wondering about this also. Why do you have to take your holster off?

I really do not like leaving a weapon in the car either, so with my Glock I feel "safer-more responsible" by leaving it behind-in pieces. The Glock tears down so fast and reassembles so quickly, I break it down leaving the frame, magazine and slide in two places (locked away) and take the barrel and spring assembly with me inside. And yes I try not to go places that I cannot carry but even here in AZ it is not worth the trouble if you get caught in forbidden places. With the barrel missing, as a usable gun it is worthless as an "Immediate" weapon. I realize if stolen, the thief could buy the parts, but until then it is not capable of firing.

I have thought about a lockbox, but if the car is stolen I still do not want them to have a fully functional weapon.

Paranoid any one ? You have two choices, carry every where, "it's concealed" right ? or leave it. If your that worried about getting your car stolen I really wouldn't worry about it, if any one wants it bad enough, you wont stop them. This in car safe, cable locks or what ever ties your hands behind your back, your purpose for carrying is your "immediate protection"

Speaking of leaving your gun in your car, how do you feel about leaving it there when someone, say---company policy, says you cannot???

I was thinking about this recently and stumbled across this.
