leaving pistol in car while parked at an airport?

I find it funny that most have responded regarding the legal aspect of this yet only a few recognize the risk of having your firearm, that you're responsible for, stolen.

Is there something amazingly dangerous about the drive to and from the airport that you need personal protection? Leave the gun safe at home and find some pepper spray?

GuyMontag, there certainly is the possibility of something dangerous on the way to the airport in many cities even if you "feel safe" in your hometown. If you feel safe with only pepperspray then you must live in a "nice" town. Personally I have seen quite a few people who can take a good hit of pepperspray and just laugh at you.

Trouble is those of us who carry feel naked without it. I get that but I'd leave it home in the vault. As for pepper spray, my LEO friend says it only disables the cops. Seems that more days a year are lost in LE to pepper spray than to maternity leave. So you would be better off with a stungun.

drail, I don't disagree and understand your point. My thoughts are that we should look at the risk of leaving a firearm in a car in an airport parking lot when those lots are known to not be the safest places. To me, the risk of someone ending up with my gun and shooting someone with it is too high especially when I would be looked at as negligent.

I wouldn't leave it behind in the car! Leave it at home, or show up 2 hours early with the proper paperwork and guidelines from the carrier you are flying and bring it with you.

Alabama law reads:
"A license to conceal carry firearms does not authorize
any person to carry a concealed firearm into, but not
limited to, the following places:
• any airport, courthouse or criminal justice building;
IMHO you need to read the "Definition" section (which will usually be the very first part of the chapter in the code) and read the definition the word "airport".

The term "airport" is too broad. Farmer Bob could clear a grass airstrip for his new cropduster on his 300 ac. farm, and his entire property would be considered an "airport". Some airports ground-lease unneeded parts of their property for other land uses that aren't even remotely aviation-related; does this make your local Starbucks an "airport"? Most state legislatures are smart enough to have written definitions protecting well-meaning CHL holders from legal traps like this. Furthermore, the vast majority of airports in the USA don't have any scheduled air transport service and can't physically accomodate heavy jets, so a man with a gun wouldn't pose any more of a security threat there than he would pose at the shopping mall; most laws recognize this.

FWIW most CHL laws contain definitions having to do with the presence of TSA security checkpoints, the presence of a clearly fenced-off FAA Airport Operations Area (AOA), and/or the conduct of scheduled air transport service. There's usually a clear carry/no carry delineation point defined in the law.

Wow.

First off, I am amazed that the OP would even ask. Yer in Dixie, boy! If he was in Jersey, I would understand the question.

Second, so many people think the OP would be hung by the thumbs if someone stole and used his (registered - gimme a break!) firearm. What if they stole your car and used it for a drive-by???

Third, so many people wanna jump all over the OP for him wanting the pistol with him for the drive and the weekend.

I always have weapon in my truck, and I am not responsible if someone steals it. And having a weapon does not influence where I park it.

It seems the question would be, what is the definition of airport.
I thought I had heard that this exact issue had been challenged and it was determined that a firearm stored in a vehicle in an airport PARKING LOT was not a violation. Though, don't take my word for it. Talk to head of security at the airport in questiion.

I live close to B'Ham. What kind of gun is it? I might be interested in keeping it for you and trying it out while you are gone. Maybe a Glock 18, I'd really like that but I'd need you to furnish the ammo also. Just kidding.
