Leaving a Shotgun Loaded?

Here in Canada, it is illegal to store a loaded firearm.

This is incomprehensible to me. Effectively disarmed by the state, unable to defend yourself and your family in your own home. I would choose to disobey this one and deal with the possible ramifications of being an objector if need be.

Not encouraging breaking the law, but to the Canadian, how would they know if your gun was loaded or not prior to you shooting an intruder?

I guess they really wouldn't know. But I've heard that police here in Canada sometimes do random searches to see how firearms are being stored. Also, here in Canada, if you shoot a burglar, the police will come and arrest you. We have to actually prove that our lives were in danger and necessary to shoot the intruder otherwise we become the criminal. Damn Canadian Laws.

I'm guessing people only get charged with breaking this law after an accidental discharge of a firearm that they shouldn't have been handling in the first place, like a curious child, or if their house gets searched by the police for some other reason. It's something they can tack on to the charges.

The word "stored" to me would not indicate "located ready for use if needed". Stored would be in an attic or cabinet or locker of some type.

Load that sucker.

I leave my maverick 88 security "cruiser ready" (chamber empty, safe off) with 7 rounds in the tube 24/7. Every 6 months or so I practice with the loaded ammo and then reload it with fresh ammo.
That's EXACTLY what I do w/both of my Mossberg® 500's (12ga & 20ga).

When I was working in the prison system we had a problem with round leaking buffer and/or telescoping when kept loaded for long periods.

I wrote and the prison instituted a policy where the tower weapons were exchanged and cleaned monthly and new ammo issued.

The old ammo that was usable went towards training.

Problem solved.

Here, the ready shotguns are kept loaded one round UNDER capacity. Seems to eliminate the above probs, but ammo gets changed at least once a year and more like every 4 months.

HTH....

HD Shotgun

I leave my 870 in a 5+0 for HD use at home. Don't forget one of the most memorable sounds is that of a round being loaded in a pump shotgun. That sound alone should give the badguy pause. And if he doesn't, that's what the buckshot is for.
