Latest Lunacy from La-La Land

From tonight's (Fri 14 July) Channel 10 news:

Perth, Western Australia

Engineering works owner in a local suburb has had his business broken into 3 times in the past 7 days.

In just one raid, thieves stole $10 000 worth of tools and computers and smashed his burglar alarm system. The continuing thefts have driven his business to the brink of insolvency.

because the alarm's broken, he sleeps in the business overnight, with a shotgun.

Sure enough, they break in again last night. He fires a shot into the wall to frighten them off, then chases them outside, firing two more shots into the sir, before phoning police.

Result: He is to be charged by the police with "weapons offences" and attempted manslaughter!!!!!!

The police held a press conference to tell us we are "only allowed to use force that will not place another person's life in danger" and (with a big, all-knowing smirk) "whenever a firearm is discharged, someone's life is in danger".

The business owner didn't have to worry about the criminals finishing off his business and his livelihood -- the police are going to do it for him!!!!

He should have just shot them and buried them some where no one would find them. Or maybe let some dingos dispose of them. That is one of the most idiotic laws I have ever heard of. But dont count us out its looking like we may catch up after this next election, depending on who gets in.
Is Perth a liberal infested city? (like lA, sAn fRaNcIsCO, and dC?)

Now, Bruce, I need to know one thing. Did the predators hang around to charge the business owner and perhaps testify?

No matter what, this lunacy has to stop. Is there no end to it? And if there is an end, what hath man wrought?

Update:

I was wrong; it wasn't $10 000, it was $30 000 worth of gear they stole.

The same cop, on another channel, also added; "You are simply not allowed to own a firearm and use it for self-protection".

oberkommando:
I don't know about your cities; but, yes, Perth is totally run by liberals (both small 'l' and capital 'L' -- the Liberal Party)

TMoney:
No, they didn't hang round. The man is being charged on his own admission.

Note: The police even admit he fired the shots "in warning", not to hit the burglars.

It was also <gasp> .... a "semi-auto" shotgun (don't know how he kept it, that hasn't come out yet). The TV station then showed "file footage" of some idiot blasting off 5 shots rapid fire, just to show "what it can do".

If the man was a member of a gun club, we'll all cop it in the neck, because the latest media push is that gun clubs are just training grounds for murderers and rednecks, teaching people the skills to kill with firearms. There's a big debate raging about this at the moment, with women being asked if they'd "feel safe if their husband was a member of a gun club".

I need 50 stout men to come with me to Australia, evacuate whoever's salvageable, and create a "controlled burn" to clean the slate of the rest. That place needs a new start. Shame, too, they were doing so well for awhile there.

Kinda like looking into a crystal ball and seeing things to come here in the US of A.

Sad, Sad, Sad. :(

I'd be willing to go help out down under ;)
Seems like to many good people getting screwed over  Seems there could be some lessons learned here ;)
Hey Bruce say the word :D

Small consolation, but remember ... the worse it gets, the better it gets. Eventually, I believe most people will recoil against this kind of insanity. Unfortunately, we may have to endure more of it before enough people awaken ...

You have to admit, the fellow must have been an idiot to report all this. Help me out here, but it seems as though the climate in Australia right now would discourage people from reporting any self defense actions, no?

scorched earth policy werks fer me.

I hear a lot of talk about 'they aint gettin MY guns! I'll fight first!" Then I look at Kiwi country.....I know most sheeple will go to the pens and give up their hair. I DO know a few however that will consider it open season on ninja-wannabees.

Final update:

The final figure of goods stolen and or vandalised is $60 000 -- no wonder he's stressed.

He's facing two years in prison -- and he's lost his gun (of course).

The West Australian newspaper this morning condemned him roundly under the headline "Shotgun Defence Points to Jail". They also pointed out the law, and I quote: It is illegal to carry a gun in WA even if it is in your own home for your own protection. Licensed gun owners must store their guns in a locked cabinet when they are not in use.

B

They keep repeating that as though it's somehow a point in their favor. Don't even "normal" folks in Australia think it's nuts to say you can't defend your home? We're still a little better off in public opinion here, then, because I can usually get people in Illinois to admit that I have every right to be armed in my home--as long as I jump through the hoops.

Bruce, I don't know how you can stand it. But then, folks in Texas don't know how I can stand Illinois, so who knows?

I think the laws in Texas make more sense. I had a (former and sort of current) cop in a class telling us you can waste someone if you're in "reasonable" fear for your safety.

An intruder in your home after dark has less legal protection than a deer in hunting season - that's not a joke it's a fact.

My former boss had an intruder in his (large) home - he ended up with a cop on the end of the line who was screaming at him furiously "shoot him! shoot him!" while he stood at the top of the stairs with (I think) his UZI.

Now, I took all this with a grain of salt, I realize the other (civil/criminal) legal and moral issues involved when threatening/implying/using lethal force; but it's still a different mindset here, certainly not one that sympathizes so much with the badguys.

It puts a nasty lump in my throat to think that I'd have to belong to some g*y gun club to shoot, always a thread away from being shut down and losing my guns because of someone finding lead in the water. And reading headlines like this. And I don't feel so good any more when I don't have a .45 on my hip.

Be f***ed if I'm ever going back to Australia.

A couple observations. If you live in UK or Australia, and exercise your self-defense rights, you can't act like you are not a criminal. You have become criminalized, and calling the police should no longer be a part of your emergency planning. In that case, you are essentially calling them on YOURSELF! Not smart. The shoot, shovel and shutup advocates make more and more sense to me every day. As most of you are no doubt aware, the Aussie govt. executed the real Croc Dundee in his home for owning a gun. We could learn some good lessons in keeping guns underground from our Commonwealth cousins...

Jeff,
"... the worse it gets, the better it gets. Eventually, I believe most people will recoil against this kind of insanity. Unfortunately, we may have to endure more of it before enough people awaken ..."

You are much more the optimist than I am. All I see is people who refuse to awaken. They may ignore the loss of their freedoms or even cheer and vote in favor of the loss of their freedoms.

For example, people in Germany and England swear they are "free" without guns because they simply don't WANT guns! Apparently the government bred freedom out of their genes.

(Yes, I have it in writing from a chap in England and heard it for 11 years in Germany.)

America seems to be on the same slippery slope.

Dennis;

Ya know? I wonder. I was stationed in Germany for a standard 18mo hitch in the mid 80s, and there were privately owned firearms EVERYWHERE.

And I don't mean target bolt guns, I mean everyone had lugers and broomhandles falling out of the closets. More little pocket pistols than you could ever count. I saw more than one MP44 tucked away in a closet, and heard tell of panzers in barns (though that is probably myth, I wonder).

I wonder how much of that "We love living Gun Free" that we hear about is just a facade over a more realistic, "We've got guns stashed absolutely everywhere, let them pass all the laws they want, makes them happy."

I dunno.

Well... ? ... Maybe I was runnin' around with the wrong drunks, er, I mean, people.

Back in '61 (poss '62) I saw a heavy duty stash in Berlin. But in West Germany I only heard of guns at gun clubs or b) in a few cases, antique collectors.

Man! To have a "few" of those broomhandles over here, huh? :)
