Latest Gallup poll, take 2

gc70,
Or they genuinely like their congressman. Or they live in a gerrymandered district....

I plan on voting for my incumbent congressman, not because he brings home the pork, but because he's one of the few congress-critters I respect.
Jim Leach, R-IA.

I truly don't believe that a Dem takeover is in the cards for this election cycle. There's simply not enough seats in play. They may be able to approach parity. We'll find out this fall.

"Can you think of a more impartial word than 'situation'? I'm all ears."

War in Iraq. That's what it is.

From my previous post: "What meaning does it impart to the question that the word war, for instance, would not have and what does that tell us about the mindset of the pollster(s)."

Did you even read my previous post before responding? Doesn't look like it.

John

john,
I'm still lookin' at it right now. I still don't see where you advocated the use of the word 'war', you merely offered it as a substitute among other possibles, including "folly".
Did somebody officially declare this a "war" when I wasn't looking? If no,then maybe "war" isn't the most accurate or impartial word to use.
All this is unimportant. Here's the real question:

Do you have reason to believe that substituting the word "war" for the word "situation" would have skewed the results substantially from what we see here? That is, more than the MoE?

Do I have reason? You mean other than all those years of statistics and science classes and the warnings of the professors? You mean other than the published work of the pollsters themselves?

"Did somebody officially declare this a "war" when I wasn't looking?"

You're a piece of work. They're shooting at each other aren't they? Sheesh.

A simple yes or no would suffice. If you feel you have reason to believe that the use of the word "situation" generates a significant error in public opinion about the "war", let's hear it.

Do you believe that referring to it as a "war" instead of a "situation" would cause the respondents to suddenly deem it unimportant? Or that it would convince them that Republicans were better able to handle it?
If so, please explain your reasoning.

You're a piece of work. They're shooting at each other aren't they? Sheesh.
No need to get personal. Can you agree that calling something a "war" that has not been declared such might in itself be misleading?

There has been a heck of a lot of that going on for the last several years. :D

war: the waging of armed conflict against an enemy

Why do I have the feeling you just like to argue to hear yourself talk.

John

johnbt,
That's nice, but not how our country legally defines "war". I guess they should check in with you next time.
Look....do you have anything, you know....constructive to add to this thread or what? Even a substantiated complaint would be helpful....

Going back and forth over the word(s) used to describe the activity in Iraq is shallow. Politicians may love to slice and dice words and plan their messages around nuances in technical or legal definitions, but real people should be able to have substantive discussions about serious topics without being sidetracked by such minutiae.

gc,
I'm tryin' man...I'm tryin'. Although to be fair wording is critical to polling accuracy. The problem is that he's attempting to spin their use of an arguably impartial word into a legitemate reason to ignore the results.
