ladies. What Semi do you choose?

For purposes of answering this thread I will, for this post only, identify as a woman in order to answer for my wife.

She has settled on the Ruger LC9s. I got her the engraved version so she could still have something "pretty". Considering your wife shoots an LCR the lc9s will be easy.

As advised, the semi for my wife will be carried in a medium to large purse only. No holster.

Thanks ladies, thru your husbands, for your responses. If there are any more suggestions with this new info please post it.

My friend, Tom, from New Jersey, asked a very important question.

Why haven't any women answered my post themselves? Are there no ladies
that belong to the firing line?

Well??????

Rarely

I rarely see members of the fair sex post here, or on any other gun board.

So I shall answer for my bride of 42 years as well.

I should not have put the rosewood grips on my 03 Colt....cuz it's not my 03 Colt any more!
One of the originals has a chunk missing, so they are tucked away.

She claimed it, and she's a darn good shot as well.

My wife likes my Ruger MK II era 22/45 Target model with four inch bull barrel for the range. For home defense she uses my Beretta 85FS .380.

My wife loves my C Series Hi Power. Very little recoil and super controllable for her. She'll shoot anything once to see of she likes it. Doesn't like the LCP or my USP .40. Trying to get to the range so she can shoot my GP100 with some .38's, or 357 mags if she's up to it.

My wife started out with a Bersa Thunder 380. Since then she has moved up to an EAA Witness Pavona in 9mm. She really likes the 9mm, and I guess the purple sparkle polymer grip frame helps. But she is shooting more now.

OK an old broad chiming in.....I am a 58 year old woman.

By the bed is usually a revolver of some sort, like my S&W 66 or 627PC (8 shots of 357 awesomeness). Also usually floating around nearby is an M&P 9 Pro Series, and/or a S&W E-series 1911SC. More on this one later.

Range toys, among the favorites are 3rd gen S&W semi-autos 5903 and 5906, 3913, and 4566. the 3913 is easily tote-able, but i have others I carry. Also a favorite range toy is the S&W commander mentioned above. Shot this very well right out of the box. Regulars also include Walther PPQ, Beretta 92FS and 92FS Compact, CZ75-B. Lately been on a Sig kick, have P226 Mk25 i am fond of, but really find i am loving an older P229. All these semi-autos are 9s, with the exception of the 1911 and 4566 in 45 (duh) and P229, which is in 40 and 357 sig (have both barrels for it).

For carry, i regularly rotate S&W 442, Kahr PM9, S&W Shield and Sig P938.

I find myself recommending the Shield often. It is very natural and easy to shoot, and seems to carry smaller than it is. The PM 9 tucks nicely and isnt too wide. I LOVE the P938, but it is a mini-1911, and I can't recommend carry unless she is willing to train to proficiency with a gun carried cocked and locked, with mandatory safety use in the manual of arms. Generally, I recommend something DA/SA for carry, for most folks who are not range rats like me. LOL the heaviest thing about the 442 is the ammo. I purse carry it without noticing the addition in weight. It also pockets nicely. (I should mention that I am 5'8", if height matters from a carry perspective.)

I am a 1911 fan, and have 4 in various flavors - Colt, couple S&Ws and a WWII era Remington Rand. My favorite to shoot is the E-series 1911PC. I have the E-series full size, all steel, and I like it. But I LOVE the scandium framed SC Commander size. It has the Bob-tail, and it just fits my hand. I thought the scandium frame might be too light or cause imbalance, but the exact opposite is true. It is very well balanced, and it makes me look good shooting it. I didn't find that lighter frame negatively affected 45 recoil at all. LOL my LGS had me at "here hold this one and see what you think." (Do they know me or what?)

One that is often overlooked is the S&W model 39-2. This is a single stack 9, and has the bob-tail, too. I LOVED this one with the first shot. It's an alloy frame, and fairly light. Not too big. It fits my hand perfectly. Well balanced, easy to stay on target with subsequent shots. Not made in a long time, but they are out there. Find one and you and she will like it.

You will notice the absence of Glocks. Don't like the grip angle, just does not fit my hand. Too different from all the other things I shoot, and just not natural to pick up and point and shoot. At least for me. YMMV For the same reason I prefer the 22/45 to my tricked out MkII. MkII is a super gun, just easier to pick up the 22/45 and not think about altering the muscle memory. Again, YMMV. Horses for courses, and all that.

Don't know if any of this helps, but 2c worth from a tired lady after a long week of work. I am happy to answer questions, any time.

You might have figured out that i don't hold on to bonus money very long LOL. Also helps no kids to feed these days, only guns!

Thanks for chiming in Vividia, I was becoming curious as to rather or not there were any women on here. My guess for the lack of participation is that #1- The women that saw this thread and have no interest in it #2- There are just that few women on firearms forums or #3- They do a lot less yapping and a lot more shooting than us...:D

My wife selected a Ruger LC9s (Talo edition) for her home defense gun. Shoots it well and keeps it clipped to her wheelchair.

My wife's not a member here, but she owns an M&P FS 9mm, a Sig 225 A1, a Sig 938, a Springfield Armory EMP4 9mm, and a Beretta Cheetah 85FS which is what she normally carries.

My wife gave up her beloved .357 Magnums after she had reconstructive surgery on her shooting hand.

She went to the LGS range and tried a large variety of rentals. She finally settled on a Glock 19 Gen4 (the only one that would do - not a Gen3, or G17 or etc.) as a nightstand gun and a Ruger LC380 as a carry gun (always in an IWB holster).

Both guns provide good control for rapid and accurate shooting. The G19 is larger than she prefers to carry, so it does nightstand duty with the more potent 9mm ammo. The ammo for the LC380 is less potent, but provides the balance she wants between the gun's reduced size and weight and a high degree of control when shooting quickly.

Clearly everyone is different, I don't find the Glock 26, 19, or 17 heavy and own all three. I love Berettas and have two of the standard size 92FS, two compact versions and two Cheetahs...although for self defense, I prefer to carry a 9mm.

H&K - I own two, the VP9 which is awesome and the p2000sk. I also have the Walther PPS which is a thin, lightweight gun. Maybe your wife would prefer the Sig 938 or the .380 version?

Not a lady, but our club conducts a Ladies Firearm Safety and Self Defense Class.

We ask the women not to buy a handgun until they try as many as possible (which the club provides).

I've been running this class for 5 years (every Wed Night - for two hours) we run two classes a night to keep the numbers manageable.

Without a doubt, the number one semi, by a large margin, these women choose it the little Ruger LC 380s.

My younger sister is on a budget, and weighs about 105 lbs. When she told me she wanted to finally buy a handgun, and told me what one she wanted, I steered her in a better direction. She went to the range and tried a few, and now owns a nice Bersa Thunder 380.

My wife isn't a member, but I have her OK to reply for her. With various options available at her fingertips, her preference is a four inch Kimber 1911 .45ACP.

We went to our range yesterday and rented 4 pistols and it was a total
disaster. My wife simply said to me" I'll stick to my LCR 357 and that was that.

Thanks everyone for all of your advice.
