DE Watters - No, it wasnt you that said these wouldnt work - It was the original designer, Alex Robinson. I think though that it could work with some more creative engineering.

That short Galil... Sexy!

Thanks, George. Original versions had probs with overheating under rapid fire (handguard design), but I think they cleared them up. The Israelis don't have many, though...because they have to buy American arms with the money American gives them!

That and the Tavor is slowly replacing them... But I still like them.
I'm a big fan of Old School.

Mad Dog told me that this chopped down M96 WILL WORK and he is having this tested out... some of his crew have a couple that they are going to do this to. And they are going to work on the M96's other issue, which is accuracy.

I am looking forward to what they come up with.

Tavor

That and the Tavor is slowly replacing them... But I still like them.

I thought so too, but then I found the Israeli Special Forces Homepage Weapons Guide on the 'Net, and here's what they say about the tavor.

However, unlike in the case of the IMI Negev, the IDF standard issued 5.56 mm Light Machine Gun (LMG), the IMI produced the TAR without a signed agreement with the IDF, which doesn't really need or want the new weapon, especially since the M16 assault rifle and its various carbines variants can be bought at very low price via the U.S. Foreign Military Support (FMS) funds.

The TAR recently finished its last field tests in the IDF Golany infantry brigade. However, due to the budgetary reasons mentioned above, as well as the lack of any actual need for such a new assault rifle, it's very unlikely that the TAR will actually be adopted by the IDF, unless the IDF will be forced to do so by a strong political domestic pressure, like happened with another IMI product - the Negev LMG, which is to an extent a clone of the FN Minimi (M249).

I guess I'll say it since no one else has. The M96 is essentially a semi-auto version of a SAW. It is WAAAAY too heavy for a 5.56 semiauto rifle (and grossly overpriced as well). When they come out with a chopped-down version of the AR-180b, then you'll have a nice, light. handy entry weapon.

Not quite.
The M96 takes its appearance from the STONER rifle, not the M249. They dont look alike.
The gas system is modeled after the FAL, not the M249.
The Operating Rod is modled after the AK, not the M249.
The Bolt Carrier is modled, again, after the FAL and not the M249.

The only similarities between the M249 and the M96 are these:
1. The both start with M.
2. They are both .223.
3. They both can use M-16 Magazines.
4. They both have triggers.

I'll agree that its over priced. But then again I think its worth the money too. Its the finest .223 caliber battle rifle on the planet - its built locally in a very small shop that doesnt have the mass production capabilities as other companies... So each one is all the more special. I don't have a problem with the extra bucks for that individuality. Look at automakers. The only ones that can operate like this is FERARRI! People who really know cars have no problem paying the extra bucks for a Ferarri.

George, what you need to do is bug Mad Dog to get a hold of one of his cut down prototypes. And then you can take it out to the desert to test the heck out of it. Of course I will volunteer to be your assistant for this test. I'm willing to make that kind of sacrifice for the good of all Gun dom. :p
