Knife Recommendations

I seem to have "misplaced" my little Kershaw pocketknife, so I'm in the market for a new knife. I Kershaw I previously had was a "blackout" model, if I'm not mistaken. I loved how easy it was to open, so I'm looking for something that is as easy and fast to open as the Kershaw was. I'm not looking to spend anymore than 60 or 70 dollars, so anybody have any recommendations? Thanks

I would buy a Spyderco. I carry a Delica 4.

No assisted opening but they have MUCH better blade steel, and are bulletproof.

Very easy one hand opening/closing and will last you for a lifetime. You can find a Delica for $40 new.

I carry a Kershaw whirlwind similar to your black out and I love it , if I ever lost it I just buy another.
They are all over e-bay in alot of different configurations pretty cheap.
Local Wally world sells black outs fer $50 I think

Take a look at the SOG Flash series. I'm pretty heavy into knives and can pretty much carry what I want. The little SOG (mine is converted to automatic) is with me every day.

Keep in mind automatics are illegal in most parts and even assisted openers are coming under the gun.

Besides, all those fancy action knives use horrible blade steel. I want my knives to cut, not to open as fas as humanly possible. I would MUCH rather carry VG-10 blade steel then AUS8 or 440C.

Kershaw Bump

I have this knife and I love it. I would recommend it to anyone. Check out http://savsonswordsandknives.com for any knife you might need. I have bought tons from him and always been pleased.

Next to guns and animation/comic books, knives are my great love.

Really??
I have purchased the SOG knife Bill d speaks of, and until i left it in a pair of pants that went for cleaning at the uniform company, it WAS the best knife I carried. Held an edge quite well. ALL those fancy knives? Are you a metallurgist???

People love various steels for various reasons. The majority of major producers use steels that will hold up quite well for the intended tasks. Pocket knives aren't really designed for cutting wire, etc.

I love my Spyderco Standard. It's been with me since the early 1990's, replacing another Standard that I had bought when they first came out (the clip was formed from the back scale) when I lost it at a building collapse during a blizzard.

Currently available as the Delica in SS. Not an assissted-opener, but quick to the hans, and opens easily one-handed. The steel holds a sharp edge on cardboard, as my wife uses hers to open boxes at a grocery store. Cardboard is a real ruiner of blades, as it's abrasive.:)

Do you even know what type of blade steel your SOG has? I find it hard to believe you're calling me out on a subject just because your knife still cuts.

It may cut, but mine will cut better and be a safer tool for much longer without a touch up.

Have you ever even owned a Spyderco or used one much? I have tons and tons of knives (I was into knives way before guns) and the Spyderco is a MUCH better knife.

Next time you try to make a comparison at least know both sides of your argument to make a valid judgment.

By the way, your SOG has AUS8 steel. A bit better than 420 series, but still way behind about a dozen other modern, inexpensive steels used today.

Blade steel is pretty good argument. BUT 440C properly heat treated is a truly great steel. Several of the knives I have seen in VG10 have had real issues, easily prone to micro chipping, very difficult to sharpen and IMHO not really worth the praise they seem to be getting from steel snobs.

In the area of automatics, the maker and heat treat are huge influences on the quality. I dare say that if you try a AlMar in AUS 8 you will be amazed at the level of quality of that blade, as they seem to really do the heat treat right on their blade.

Daltons, Protechs, Microtech's are really top notch blades too, as good as any none automatic. Learn about the topic before you start slamming Auto's and lumping high grade knives in with spanish and italian "junk" exports. (note, both spanish and italian makers DO make higher end knives, just that most of what we see are pretty poor)

As far as the original post, there are several good knives out there in the range you are looking for. The spyderco's mentioned, the benchmade line as several good options, many really like the griptillians. Al Mar has some really nice knives, too Not sure what the price range you are looking at is, but for under a hundred you can get a really really good knife, for under fifty you can get a very servicable knive too.

I agree 100% here. I think Spyderco does a wonderful VG10 though. Just like I feel Benchmade does a good 440C.

Kershaw, Cold Steel, Sog however, not so much.

hey,TF, I wasnt calling ya out. I felt your statement of ALL those knives was dumb. No, I dont know what steel MOST of my knives are. I collect switchblades. Period. I dont cut with many of them ,though I DO carry a few. That SOG held up well, considering the abuse I gave it. I think you would be surprised at the knife knowledge that is on this forum.
I havent owned a Spyderco. Excuse me, but I buy more guns than knives. I dont have the money for a knife like that, that i wouldnt carry.
Too many hobbies, bikes, knives, guns, shotguns, fish. Sorry to have disturbed ya....

Assisted Openers

I too like the Kershaws. In a small/slim knife, the S30V/G10 Leek is what I carry daily:

It's pretty well the ultimate EDC, for my uses. An S30V blade steel knife for hundreds less than the next competitor using this excellent stainless steel. But all Leeks are up there in the just-right pocket carry category, for my money. Just not with as good of steel as the S30V Leek.

In that price range, in a bigger one, the Kershaw SpeedBump is cool too:

I have the *SPEC* Bump which is very similar but uses better steel and is more expensive.

Another pair of good AOs for the money are the Voodoo and Wild Weasal from CRKT:

http://www.knifeoutlet.com/shop/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=CRK1013A

These two use 154CM, which is very good steel.

I also tried this SOG AO and didn't like it much. It seemed a bit cheesily-made:

Playboy Penguin is right; the savson site is the best place to buy from. And yes, Spydercos use good steel and are great values, but they are irrelevant to a discusion of AO knives.

I just bought a benchmade 3300 Infidel auto.

It is made from D2 tool steel. :p

Pretty sweet knife, opens with one hand rapidly. Also closes one handed, with equal rapidity.

Good-LORD, penguine... PLEASE tell me you didn't pick out the paint color for that wall behind your knife in the photo.... :D

Anything Gerber is a sure bet to a top-notch knife. Been using them for years and love 'em.

i also carry a columbia river m-16, ive had it for a couple years and its still going strong. i think i paid $35 for it. crkt has some cool knives that wont put a big hole in your wallet. i bought a ryan model 7 and a ryan plan B last year for x-mas gifts and man both knives were so cool i should have bought an extra one of each for myself.

You are obviously a neophyte who likes to tell everyone how much you know, instead of trying to be helpful. Much ado is made about the latest supersteels, and you apparently want to brag that you have some. AUS8 is a very good steel for a using knife, and the SOG knives are properly ground.
But then, Im sure you probably are a metallurgist, custom knifemaker, or maybe an armchair commando. I fool around with knives a little bit, and will say again that the SOG Flash series is a great knife for the money- but, what would I know?
