Amnesty nets over 100,000 knives

More than 100,000 weapons were handed to police in England, Scotland and Wales during a national knife amnesty.

During the five-week amnesty, which ended on 30 June, people could dispose of knives in secure bins without being prosecuted for possession.

Yeah, that's the next step for the banners - they already got the guns there. I don't think you're allowed to carry a baseball bat on the street there, either.

Watching the UK and Australia is a good view of what could happen here.

Anyone who belongs to the NRA to support our firearms rights, should also join AKTI (.org) who's fighting for our knife rights.

From the link.
"The amnesty is certainly a step in the right direction and I hope it will prove to be a catalyst in changing the culture of routine knife possession, minimising the opportunity for the serious harm that can follow from the violent use of a knife," he added.
:barf:
They have completely lost their minds in the U.K.:(

This thread isn't gun related.

It is politically relevant, though, so off to L&P.

This post makes me sad, especially coming from a mod. Well at least you didn't delete it.

Wacki, government-sponsored weapon/tool amnesties are fundamentally legal&political issues, even when they're gun amnesties. You don't get fined for posting a thread like this to a less-appropriate forum. Why be sad?

Why not just ban freedom and get it over with?
Because (mixing metaphors here) "War is Peace while Work will set you Free". The law abiding will continue to live thinking gov't will protect them while playing fair. Those who will not abide by any laws will continue to prey on available targets. Governments will continue to do what they can to preserve their power base.

Freedom? That went out of style a long while ago. It's all about Power nowadays. (Wasn't it always about Power anyway?) As long as the proles have their TV sets, some recreational drugs to numb the mind and food on the table, why should they care? Really. Violence is scary to most. It reeks of... pain, blood, sweat and tears. Better to smile and just turn in those horrid implements of death and destruction.

Next up. Cobblestones, sticks and glass bottles.

a British prime minister once said

"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves" William Pitt

William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, known as 'the Great Commoner', dominated the political scene influencing government from within and without. He is remembered for his vocal criticism of harsh British policy levied against the American colonies and his skills as a wartime leader during the Seven Years' War.

STUPID British Lawmakers!!

What's next, sticks and stones and anything not make of soft rubber? They got rid of guns first, murder rate stayed the same but switched to knives, and now asked people to hand in knives??!!

When will they understand that it's not the weapon used, it's the person using it that needs to be controlled??!!

'We're More Secure Now'
Updated: 10:47, Friday July 14, 2006

Almost 90,000 weapons were surrendered in England and Wales during the recent five-week knife amnesty.

Among the weapons left in sealed bins were samurai swords, axes, machetes, meat cleavers and an 1880 bayonet.

Police in Devon and Cornwall were even left with an M72 lightweight anti-armour rocket launcher.

Government minister Vernon Coaker said: "I am delighted that so many knives have been taken out of circulation.

"I believe that fewer knives on our streets make us all more secure."

However, figures show that during the amnesty, between May and June, there were 19 fatal stabbings and 91 serious knife attacks.

The Home Office is now making £500,000 available to police forces to tackle the issue through education and special operations.

A series of high profile knife crimes brought the issue to public attention ahead of the amnesty.

These included the murder of off-duty special constable Nisha Patel-Nasri, who was stabbed with her own kitchen knife on her doorstep.

Just six days before the amnesty began, promising young footballer Kiyan Prince was murdered outside his school in north London.

So, how exactly would the turning in of swords and bayonets have saved her? Are they going to take all kitchen knives too and issue everyone plastic utensils?

Excuse me while I go barf!!!

Recent story that amused me: Scotland installed metal detectors to cut down (no pun intended) on knives on the trains. When none were found, they declared it a success. What odds do you want that if they'd stopped 3, or 3,000 people with knives, they'd also declare it a success?

Wonder what the chances are to purchase these "turn-ins". Maybe we can make a request for a price...by the hundred pound! :D No telling what might show up!
Mark.

Where would you even find one on that side of the Atlantic? It's the UK; a person would be carrying a cricket bat. Since they are wide and flat, being hit by the narrow edge would probably leave quite a mark; not that any decent, well-trained Briton would ever even think about doing such a thing. Nor would they ever make trouble at a soccer match, right? Unfortunately, it's not the decent ones that were ever any worry; it's the criminals and hooligans.

The UK is removing all the "equalizers." That means the biggest, baddest thugs will rule the roost. Won't that be nice? It's a whole new class system for them!

Personally, on an average day I'm carrying quite a few sharp, pointy things. I've got weak fingernails and I think a small multi-tool is a handy thing to have. The Brits who have emplaced and approved these weapons bans -- and their bedwetting kin everywhere -- would undoubtedly consider me uncivilized. They're welcome to but they are exactly backwards: humans are tool-using critters; without tools, we're just singularly defenseless primates at the mercy of the strongest -- and that's no definition of "civilized!"

"So what does the U.K. use to cut their steaks with?"

If you boil a steak long enough, it just falls apart with a fork.
