Kicking around an idea

Well guys I'm kicking a idea around for my next rifle build. My last build was a Remington 700 that started as a .308 and re-barreled it to .375 Reaper. Its a fun thumper but I'm thinking something else now. I'm thinking another Remington 700 ADL in .223 and re-barrel it to .277 Wolverine. This one will have more of a sporter style since I think this would be a nice little deer rifle inside of 300yds, which is about the farthest shot on my property. Has anyone done a build like this?

I looked into the wolverines for an AR build, but decided against it. Mainly because I couldn't find any dies . They were always backordered/out of stock for the several months I was looking.

I liked the performance of the cartridge, and every review I could find, the guys all loved it too. Brass can be formed, although it takes a little more effort than some other .233 based cartridges, and is also available from Mad Dog Weapons. If I could have found some dies I would have built one.

If you are looking at Mad Dog Weapon Systems. I would seriously consider one of the wildcats based off the 6.5x47 Lapua case. 6mm Lynx, .257 Bobcat, or 7mm Valkyrie would all be a great deer killer in a light 20" barreled gun to 300yds or so. I have the 7mm Valkyrie in an AR-15 and it my favorite rifle and the one deer I shot with it was at 117yds and she didn't go 5 ft.

While the Wolverine is an interesting concept, I still feel the best wildcat you can do on the .223 case is the 6X45. The biggest pluses are it's a simple neck up to 6mm, bullets from 55-105 grains, dies are easy to find, and their is tons of load data available. Plus shooting a 105 grain 6mm bullet at 2500 fps flies flatter and hits harder at your 300 yard max for deer than the 110 grain bullet out of the Wolverine.

However, if your mind is made up on the Wolverine do it. Just let us all know how it does. I'm sure you'll kill plenty of deer handily with it.

Taylor, I'm not dead set on the .277 Wolverine. I might have to take a look at the 6x45. Know any links that have the 6x45 information?

Might I suggest a 25-45 sharps or even a 6.8 spc for an ar build. If I were to build a custom rifle right now it would be a 6.5-06 on a howa action.

6.8mm SPC II may be your best bet...

I'd say take a look at the 6.8mm SPC. Plenty of everything available to load & shoot it including premium deer bullets. The extractor/ejector for a rem 700 is a minor problem but easily solved. Note that 6.8 rim is .422", .223 rim is .378" & .308 win rim is .473".

Rem 700 ADL rifles sell for $379+tax on sale around here (Academy). Buy a popular caliber (.308,.243,7mm-08,...) & don't shoot it. Sell the barrel as new on ebay & put proceeds toward your build. Best way to get a donor action!

FWIW...

Since the OP is talking of a .223 M700 rebarrel, a 6.8 SPC would require a modification of the bolt face from .373" to .420". A standard .308 bolt would be too big and would have to be bushed, an even greater expense. Or he could buy a complete bolt from a source like PT&G, simpler but still expensive at over $200. However, I do believe that if a person wants to run a .277 caliber in a .223 length magazine the 6.8 SPC is the best choice.

Now back to the 6X45, there isn't any fancy site with 6X45 info like the Wolverine. The reason is that it was first wildcatted in 1965 before the internet and a lot of what is known on the cartridge was discovered by trial and error. A simple internet search will provide a person with more info than they can digest at one sitting, and you have to sort through the bolt action and AR data as well.

The main reason I'm not doing a 6.8spc is it requires too much specialty components. I do have a 6.8spc AR but I'm wanting to do a bolt action. I've built enough AR's and nothing against them but I'm thinking of something a little different that I can use readily available brass and components. Especially since I already reload .270win, .308win, 30-06, .243win, .223/5.56, 6.8spc, .300BO, and .375 Reaper. I'm gonna have to look into the 6x45 a little more now.

I think 25-45 sharps would be the perfect varmint/coyote and maybe the occasional deer. Especially in a bolt action platform. You can still use your .223 brass to reload for it like you want to. Top that off with a night vision scope and youll be having loads of fun.

I really want a 6.5x47 lapua, it was developed for 300-1000 meter competition as the most accurate cartridge lapua could come up with in a short action low recoil rifle.

Inside 400 there's plenty of killing power for deer with more potential for precision than most shooters are capable of.

6.5X47 Lapua will not work on the OP's action, he has a .223 bolt face. Now a 6X47 Remington will fit in his action and that's another good cartridge that performs about the same as the 6mm PPC cartridge. However, .222 Rem Mag brass is nearly impossible to find these days and I loose about 25% of the brass making it from .204 Ruger if I don't anneal.

Years back, a friend of mine rebarreled a 223 to 7mm TCU. He claimed it was the best cartridge in the world for coyotes and deer. Kind of like a 30-30 only flatter shooting, 150 gr bullet at 2,300 fps, 100 grainers at 2,700 fps.
