Keeping your Carry Gun Clean

Was starting to think I was weird... it took 17 posts to see I'm not alone, thanks StevieW.

I could not trust a firearm that has not been test fired after disassembly and cleaning. I clean my stuff before going to the range. I carry daily.

SteveWonder,

When i was a newbie i used to live fire my guns after cleaning for years for the same reasons you do. I became more confident in my ability and went from live fire to the pencil test. I figured that if the firing pin worked fine and the slide cycled, the extracter is where i found it i feel confident.

The pencil test will give you peace of mind.

New to The Firing Line does not equal newbie. Everyone has their own comfort level. Not bashing yours at all. We just have different opinions.

i carry in my back pocket in south louisiana. i have to use a good oil to prevent rust so there are often lint balls behind the hammer(p32). i use my computer air duster to blow the dust/lint out every few days. i do a thorough cleaning/oiling every 2 weeks or so.

Once a month for my active carry weapon, every other month for my bug and every 6 months for anything not in use.

I can't bring myself to clean an already "clean" gun. I practice at the range at least every other week, so my carry gets cleaned regularly anyways. I don't see why I should clean it more than that. As for the sweaty rust problem, I solved it by wearing an undershirt and tucking it in, then your IWB is between the shirt and the waistband. I still have to toothpick the slide grip of the skin that comes off my fingers from chambering a round, eww lol

I vary what I carry, most often when I get home I take the gun out of it's holster, and put it back in the safe, in that case quick wipe off with a soft cloth ever time I carry, there are several that stay in there holster for weeks on end, I clean those when they come out of the holster. I keep most of my guns in the safe, keeps the bride to be happy. :o

At least twice a month after my range visits, but I do run some light oil through it once a week especially in this cold months.

How often do you guys clean your carry piece?

I'm very surprised at the answers which seem to indicate that no one that has replied has served with a combat unit. In Vietnam, my rifle got cleaned three times a day and more often if we had a firefight. My 1911 got cleaned at least once a day.

Fast forward to today, after nearly 40 years of concealed carry. My carry gun gets wiped down and a very light fresh coat of oil (Hoppes) is applied at the end of each and every day. I field strip it and remove the grips at least once a week to wipe down the frame down and to apply a thin coat of light oil to the entire gun, including the barrel. It gets a range workout at least twice a month. It gets detail striped every 1200 - 1500 rounds, depending on what brand and type of ammo I feed it and the recoil and firing pin springs get replaced at that time.

A bit overkill? Perhaps...but my life and the lives of my loved ones depend upon the condition of my carry gun and I want it in tiptop shape at all times. Nothing worse than pulling the trigger and hearing a "click" when you expect a "boom."
