Keeping your Carry Gun Clean

How often do you guys clean your carry piece? I carry IWB, and find that even with a closed end holster, the barrel picks up lint, dust, hairs, just little crap that probably wouldn't affect shooting but just the same, i run a solvent then oil then dry patch about once a week.

Also - do you ever get rust spots developing from accumulated sweat? OWB would probably avoid that but alas, i don't often carry OWB.

It's been nearly 5 months for me. I pocket carry and owb my 442. I should clean it more often. The other day I noticed lint build up near the trigger and I don't want that crap getting up inside the workings.

Its a loosing battle with the dust bunnies, you just have to stay after them. The longer you wait, the more you get. I use a "can of air" on mine, the reloads, and my holster every couple of days if I think of it. My gun usually gets shot once a week so it gets cleaned anyway.

I've always used an IWB holster and used to have a major problem with rust. I sweat like a pig and Im active, both at work and play, and leather holsters with blued or parked guns are a bad combo, especially in the warm and sweaty months. In that case, hard chrome or Tennifer and kydex are your friends.

Kydex holsters in general are just much easier to deal with too. The dont absorb or hold moisture, nor do they release irritating chemicals. They dont generally embed dirt or abrasives, and can easily be cleaned by rinsing them out under the tap, and instantly ready for use, by drying them with a paper towel.

They also dont wear the guns finish "overall" like leather. They do wear on the specific contact points though, which can mean noticeable wear marks in a few places, but the rest of the gun looks new.

Kydex is easier on your body, and doesnt rub you raw like leather, and especially wet leather, when its against your bare skin.

Price wise, they are usually a lot cheaper, and last a lot longer.

Anytime after use maybe once a month if it hasn't been used. Just a light wipe down and visual inspection.

All my guns, unless shot, get a quick wipe down and inspection on the first of every month. I've never noticed any problems from IWB carry.

Since mine are mostly Glocks and I have a practice version of them, I clean the carry guns maybe once every 3 months (and shoot it then.)

But if I've gone to a desert or something like that where lots of sand or grudge gets in the gun, then I'll clean it right after I get out of the stuff.

I thoroughly clean it every time I shoot it ....a couple times a month. But I wipe it down a couple of times a week.

Its not a big deal ...

I run stainless or plastic so rust is pretty rare in my situation.

I always press check or inspect the gun when I pick it up and put it on. I hit it with a blast of canned air from the computer as needed for dust bunnies.

Clean it after range sessions.

YMMV

I clean mine after use, and I usually run 1 at least 1-2 mags/cylinders of my carry gun(s) anytime I hit the range, which I shoot for once a month at least.

Otherwise, I clean my carry gun every few weeks, wiping it down probably once a week. I carry stainless most of the time, but I've never had rust problems.

Im just too anal. You will not find a dust bunny on any of my guns. Also, once cleaned and you action the slide a few times, the little bit of oil that appears behind the slide rails are as clean as the oil in the bottle.

Once cleaned i take a white cloth patch and wipe over the dis assembled pistol. Over the breech, chamber, feeding ramp, rails and EXPECT it to come out as white as when i started. I literally sit with a tooth pick and scrape the corners, locking lugs, extracter etc.

I shoot regularly so when i sit to clean guns, i will give my carry guns a once over. Its a nice time to bond with your pistol, i do not see it as a chore.

I am alive because of my guns. I owe them respect and the best care i can give.

carry guns go to the range once or twice a month along with safe guns I feel like shooting, everybody gets cleaned after the trip ... otherwise, they're on their own ...

Get them re-finished with Birdsongs Black-T. More durable than pretty much any factory finish, and a nice matte black. Even when bone dry, the teflon finish has a higher lubricity than an freshly lubed untreated gun. The only areas not coated are the chamber and bore (still need a film of oil). Higher than factory finish resistance to humidity and salt spray, etc. Well worth the investment.

+1
I feel negligent if I don't shoot my carry guns on a regular basis. For me, at least once a month, more if possible. Of course all get cleaned when I get home.

Thats where having multiple of what you carry makes things a lot easier, and why mine gets shot every time I go.

I just shoot the one in the holster, and replace it with a duplicate when Im done shooting. Repeat once or twice a week as necessary. :)

If you are shooting your carry gun then cleaning it and reloading it for carry, how do you know it will shoot the next time you pull the trigger? I clean my guns every 6-8 months or so with Simple Green and hot water (Glocks) and detail strip them and then go to the range to insure they will FIRE! I do not clean guns from the range and load them up. How do you know your gun will fire after you clean and swab it??? Me I have to know that I did not do anything wrong, and yes a time or two I have reassembled them wrong and things happened, but got fixed on the range.....I keep and shoot dirty guns.

Once every two weeks.
The reason is, I carry it while working in the barn (straw dust, feeding and other nasty things) riding and training (dust and dirt and rain and.....)

you get the Idea....

Because it does every time I shoot it in practice, and I practice at least once a week, and in 45 some odd years, its never been a problem.

I wont carry a dirty gun. If for nothing more than to head off unneeded problems if trouble should occur and someone accuses you of waving your gun around and shooting it off, or whatever other stupid reason you can think of where you might have to turn your gun over to a cop and prove thats not the case.

Dust Bunnies! :D

in the barrel and on the trigger assembly, that's where the lint buildup occurs. going to clean tomorrow, i think.
