Keep Taurus 84UL .38 or trade for S&W J frame

Repair concerns are valid. Some gunsmiths won't work on them and Taurus may or may not fix it right.

With that said, you may never have a problem with it and I wouldn't take the financial beating over a what if. Again, I wouldn't own a Taurus if it were given to me but I'd suggest keeping yours. There is simply no reason to get rid of it based on your concerns over what might happen.

Now, if you just want a S&W and know you are going to take a hit on the Taurus, by all means trade it or sell it off. The S&W is a better gun.

I own a Taurus 85UL. It has five hundred rounds through it and it seems ok so far. I'm debating keeping it or selling it for a S&W J frame. I'm concerned about the longevity of the Taurus.

The Taurus is under warranty (lifetime). I figure if it needed say $50 worth of work down the line it would be better for a local 'smith to do it rather than send it in due to shipping charges. If something catastrophic happened, I would send it in for servicing. Would they fix it right?
I have 11 Taurus® revolvers and 4 of them are Mdl 85's, They have THOUSANDS of rounds through them w/narry a hickup. I carry two Mdl 85SS2UL's everyday. As for fixing your gun; your damn right they will fix it. Taurus® was the first firearms manufacturer to offer a lifetime warranty dating back all the way to 1977. Taurus® warrants the product and not the purchaser! Ruger® doesn't even offer a warranty on their firearms!

Seeing as the 84UL seems to be reliable I would keep the Taurus and save for the J frame. If one revolver is good then 2 would be better!:D Of course another reason to have a pair of similar sized self defense handguns is if you ever have to use it in a self defense situation, the revolver would be confiscated during the investigation. You would then have nothing to take its place if you trade.
