Norinco Type 56 Makarov
Hirlau, This Nork Mak is one of my favorite pistols in my collection, and this one has one of the best finishes I have ever owned on a pistol. I bought it NIB for $230 from a guy in Worcester MA that had a few new old stock last year. It was imported by BETA arms in Los Angeles in 1992 (B prefix). The photo does not do justice as blue is almost on par with my S&W 27-2, and fitting of parts is as good as most East Germans I've handled. It came with ugly reddish-brown thumb-rest plastic grips that were very cheap looking, along with the cheapest, non-functioning adjustable rear sight.
I ordered up a set of red lacquered wattle wood grips from Dennis Marschal Grips in Hungary, (
http://www.marschalgrips.com/ ) a solid fixed sight, and 19lb Wolff spring from Makarov.com when they were still in business. I am happy with the results, and I actually think that the Maks in general are good looking guns. I also notice that I rarely see these Norinco Makarovs used in gun stores any more so I think that they are getting rare.
Comparing this to a Bulgie or IJ-70 Russian, there are very few sharp edges, and I would say that the Norinco almost feels like it was given a bit of a melt job at the factory before finishing. Like all Makarovs, it feeds every type of ammo without a hitch, but when the gun was new, Hornady XTP's would catch on the first found of a full magazine, requiring a brisk tap to the bottom of the magazine. This doesn't happen anymore, and I've switched to using my old stock of Barnauls anyway which hasn't had a single FTF or FTE in over 1000 rounds.
