justice in America

+1 to the "legal system" and not a justice system. We all like to think its fair, but its not. If youre rich and powerfull enough, you can get away with murder, litterally. There have been enough cases in recent history to evidence this.

White collar and political crime surounds us too, but instead of focusing on the crime, often it comes down to petty groveling about syntax of what the accused said, Or some obscure happening in their past. The big picture gets overlooked for obessing over minor details, something that happens quite a bit here at TFL, by the way.

If youre poor, relatively unknown, and cant get good legal defense, you can be put in jail pretty easily. With enough money and good enough lawyers, you can get away.

In a perfect system, The justice dept would be kept seperate from the rest of govt, so that money, political freinds, and elections would be less likeley to sway a court decision. A good policy would be that lawyers or judges wouldnt be eligable to be elected into a position as a representative or senator.

Another more drastic thing to try... If its found that a prosecutor puts away an innocent person, after the acused has served some time, Allow the prosecutor to finish the sentence. It would make them alot less likeley to put somone away because their election or campain funds depended on it.

And yes, I think alot more white collar and political criminals should be brought to justice for things they've done.

Most of our courts are kangaroo courts and dog and pony shows. There is too much politics and money involved with the system for it to work properly. Yes, some bad guys are brought to justice... and rightfully so. However, all too often we see some poor idiot get slammed over the head with a felony by the courts for making a dumb mistake which will haunt him for the rest of his life. I am a believer in a good yelling at from the judge the first time a person is brought in. If you become a regular customer of the county jail.. then I say throw the book at the perp.
