It's worth as much as the gun.

Back in 1997 I worked there for a short while,,,

I never did like little guns, but when concealed carry became a reality I decided I was just going to have to get used to them. The Ruger SP101 is the most comfortable for me to hold and shoot.
 
If you want a shootable 38 Special you might as well have the best: the Model 14. These are the target models with great sights, nice wide triggers and overtravel stops. Even though the double action trigger is rarely used on these, both of mine came with very smooth trigger pulls. These were S&W's flagships at the time. I suspect they got a bit more hand fitting than a bulk order of police department Model 10s.

Needless to say they are very accurate.
 
Why does it have to chamber 38? Thats one of the great attributes off the 357 such as the Colt Lawman snub, you always have the option.
 
S&W Model 15

I have four 38spl revolvers. The model 15 is my favorite. Not original grips but target grips are most comfortable for me.

Police trade-in FWPD (Fort Worth?), had Pachmayer Presentations on it when I got it back in late '90s.
 
I have a 4" Smith Mod. 10, chambered 38 Spl. It's also ported and has had a trigger job. I expect it was someone's IPSC gun. It's one of my favorite for "plinking" and also just general utility carry.

I bought it precisely because it was chambered 38 Spl and not .357. I have tons of 38 brass, load 158 gr. Oregon Trails Laser Cast bullets w/ HS6 or Win. 231 -- and load them +P because this gun is a magnum frame.

The other reason I bought it is because Dennis at the shop made me a deal. The gun had been sitting for months because it wasn't chambered .357. For a few bucks I can purchase a reamer and rechamber for the longer case, but I'm not going to do it.

Chambered in 38 makes it "Special." :D
 
I missed the snubby qualifier, and few old the older 5 screw S&W 38s will be found for $500 ish. I guess really my suggestions are not what you are looking for MWM, but they are guns you could perhaps consider after getting a 38 snub. I know I never regretted getting any of the guns I pictured, esp that outdoorman - that is one sweet revolver.

Maybe you could look for a baby chief (aka early pre 36) but that also will be hard to find for $500 ish. They have a smaller trigger guard than the later pre 36 and model 36 guns. They're very sought after and high quality, being made in the 1950s. The baby chief and a diamondback snub (because they're rare) are at the top of my snubnose list.

I think a model 15 snub would fit the bill well. I was going to suggest a 15, but I don't even have one! I need to buy one. Anyways, model 15 snubs would satisfy the need for an older S&W, the cost need, the snubnose, and the 38 special all in one. They're also not rare, so you don't have to worry about them, like you would most Colt snubs (Colt snubs are pretty hot in the market) They can be found for well under $500 although they will not sit around long as model 15 snubnoses are more sought after than 4 in models.

I only have two revolvers that are .38 special. I am not sure why I have so few as I really like the cartridge and the guns that are chambered for it.

One is this K38 Masterpiece that is capable of far better accuracy than I am:

The model 36 is a favorite of mine. Light enough for carry, but heavy enough to lower the recoil for fast follow up shots. I own airweights as well. But as far as my favorite .38 special only is a 36 every time. Not shooting plus p isnt a problem for me as i carry standard pressure in all my .38 snubs anyway. As far as .357 snubs go though sp101 baby!
 
Another vote for the Model 15

I'm trying to pry one away from my best friend.
They don't call them 'Combat Masterpiece' for nothing.
