Just one more thing on that "cops" thread

Exactly what smithz and Kframe said,

I too, tend to “press the pedal” on safe, open stretches of the highway and have been doing so for more than three decades without accident. I consider myself a very safe and careful driver. When involved in activities above posted speed limits, I devote 150% concentration focused on my actions. I speak from experience that plain speed does not kill, but careless drivers do. I rarely get caught, maybe once out of 500 incursions above 120mph. If I get caught, so be it and I deal with it.

One personal gripe I have is that I wish the cops would ticket more of the careless drivers on the road. I don’t know how many times that I have watched a highway patrol pull up behind a “rolling roadblock” in the left lane, ride his bumper for a couple of miles (hoping the rube will look in his/her rear view mirror and move over), and then blast around them on the right lane leaving them in the dust.

For all the active cops on this board: Be fair, give those @ssholes a ticket too!!!

Grrrr

Do we have a new "feature" on the board? :)

The "speed kills" claim has about as much truth as HCI's claim that gun control mean lower gun crime. I spent 9 years stationed in Germany where there was no speed limit on the autobahn, except near the large cities where traffice was quite heavy. My cruising speed was 110 to 115 and 125 or 130 when I was in a hurry. Never had an accident and I drove a lot of miles in those 9 years. Rest assured my car was in excellent mechanical condition and I kept my eyes on the road. I can count on one hand the number of accidents I saw on the autobahn. There were far more accidents on the secondary roads where there were speed limits. Our interstate highways were designed for high speed travel and so are our cars now. Speed limits have been made strictly for revenue collecting under the guise of highway safety to appease the driving-challenged sheeple.

Exactly. Otherwise a perfectly good traffic lane would be wasted! (All that tax money spent on a lane for that purpose--SOMEONE had better use it!)

I never write speeding tickets....just reckless driving. I also don't have a civilian government above me hassling me to "make money" by "making tickets". Put the blame where it REALLY belongs.....squarely on the shoulders of the jerks YOU elect....

If speed killed, we'd be knee-deep in dead jet pilots.

Speed differentials kill... As a dedicated crotch-rocket pilot, I'd be a stone liar if I said I didn't push the envelope every now and then.

But there's a time and a place, and if you get pulled over, take it like a grownup- you could read the signs...

Just a "few" more things ;)

Speeding is (deity of choice's) way of letting you know you have too much disposable income. ;)

Traffic accidents and AD/ND have a lot in common.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have better use for my income than to trade it for a bit of time saved. If you feel it's worth a hundred bucks to be the first one at the party, hey it's your money.

Hey! I thought the point of driving was to avoid recks! :D Why would you give me a ticket if I were completely reckless???

Actually, this raises a question--what is the legal difference (and court result) between these two (speeding / reckless driving)?

Speed don't kill?? lets ask that to drivers from = NASCAR, long haul truck drivers, State troopers, who drive faster [NASCAR DRIVERS] log more miles and see more people driving and thier driving habits [truckers & Stata Troopers].

They will give any of you; [who care to listen] about the driving habits of the general public. [or lack thereof] Couple that with an inflated egos these so called "expert drivers" possess and Barney Olefield attitude = Morons at work. Then throw into the mix also sharing the highways = impaired drivers on drugs or alcohol, elderly people whos reaction times have slowed, road ragers etc.... :(

If you want to drive fast = go build yourself a Stock car or buy a crotch rocket head to your nearest dirt track or asphalt track.. So when you crash and burn; the only people you will kill or injure are yourself and others who chose to take that choice. Public highways are not the place for drivers who confidence is far above thier real ability to operate a motor vehicle. Lord knows... theres enough out there already.

12-34hom:

I've never been so vehemently agreed with! There are a lot of folks out there who write speed checks their skills can't cash. When they're on a bike, we call them squids. I took the time to seek professional instruction (Keith Code's Superbike School: the Gunsite of the crotch rocket world). I took the time to acquire a racing license and spend time on a track. But I must say that anyone who tells me they never exceed the speed limit on public roads is, to put it bluntly, a liar. I commute 100 miles per day on a motorcycle, I see it all out there. If you were to do 55 on an Atlanta interstate, you would be rear-ended.

When I am on a deserted rural road with no cross streets or driveways, I exceed the speed limit. Seriously. If the differential in speed between me and a roadside tree is the cause of my death, that's between me, my insurance companies (vehicle AND health, no 'ward of the state' vegetable crap please), and God. If I get pulled over, I acknowledge my speed graciously and take what's coming, yet despite years of this behavior, I have yet to recieve a ticket on my bike of any kind. Perhaps I'm just careful about where I 'wring it out'...

I remain your (accident-free) friend,

Tamara

Wow, talk about a timely thread.

Today I was heading down a 2 lane highway to go to a friends house. Another friend of mine was driving in front of me, and we came up to a caravan of cars doing about 40 or so. Speed limit was 55.

My friend pulled out, made the pass, and got clear. I wasn't so lucky.

I was making my pass, and as I did, the guy I was passing decided that he wanted to be in the same lane. I moved over onto the gravel shoulder and started to brake. That's when things went haywire.

I guess I moved over a little too far and nipped the grass next to the shoulder. The back end of my car came around, and I fought to correct it to no avail. I went down into the ditch and rolled almost three times.

Talk about a crappy day.

Add "travelling salesmen" to the list of professional drivers like long-haul truckers and cops.

I log about 30,000 highway miles a year, and boy do I see some idiots out there! For the speeders--you think your rural roads at 3 a.m. are safe, but animals, old farmers, paperboys, etc. are going to be out there too. If you miss them, you'll probably end up in someone's living room avoiding the initial collision.

Most of the people I see speeding come right up to my bumper--in the right lane, no less--before changing to the passing lane. My guess is they are trying to use me as a radar screen for as long as possible, which is stupid.

For you 100 mph plus speeders, it isn't just your problem--it's ours too, if you'd quit thinking of only yourselves for more than a few seconds. Go to the track.

Hmm...I drove school bus for three years. I learned real quick that lots of people can't see a big yellow/orange school bus with flashing lights and a stop sign (which also had flashing lights in it) that they had to practicaly drive under, with the the bus's horn blasting.

I won't mention what I think of the people who passed school busses on the right side. While the stop arm was out.

I learned two things that worked, one flashing high beams to get them to stop. And waving thanks to everyone who stopped for the stoparm.

The waving really lowered their stress levels IMO. I noticed that once I added waving they started stopping before I even hit the 8 way lights (the flashing amber and red lights on top of the bus).

People who didn't pay attention and those that tail gated or ran stop signs were always a threat. As where the cars who though a bus could accelerate as fast as a car. People who drove fast where never a problem though.

Glamdring,
good idea to wave. It not only catches people's attention, but also reminds them that it's not just a "bus," but a bus with people on it!

This is an argument that will never end. I will say this, i crashed my motorcycle at 80MPH. I hit a speed limit sigh(ironic isnt it?) If i wouldnt have been doing 80 I would still have my left leg.

I still speed in my car. I feel its alot safer. Although i have slowed down alot since my crash. All i can say to the people that think speeding is ok, is yes. it is ok. I just wish the fast lane was actually set up by the government to be a fast lane, and allow people to do 80MPH in the fast lane and ticket anyone who isnt doing the speed limit including slow drivers who make me burn my brakes because they want to do 50 in the fast lane. If i had the money i'd buy billboard time and display "ARE YOU DOING 80MPH? NO? THEN GET OUT OF THE LEFT LANE !!!"

Tim :)
