Just ONE auto.....help

I'd also like to suggest that you take a look at the CZ 75. For the money there are few if any better bargains out there that compare.

I also agree with the caliber that you are getting for yourself as you can shoot a lot of it at lesser cost than other rounds. This will help develop your skills.

Most 9mms that you can buy these days will be accurate enough, reliable and durable. On that level the field is pretty level till you jump way up in price.

So it comes down to what fits your hand, what feels good to you, natural in your grip and the operating system. Are you looking for polymer, steel or alloy? Hold as many guns in your hand to help make a decision.

From your ideas so far it looks like you're after a traditional da/sa piece, rather than a dao or sa.

Next, do you want a Browning type set up like the Hi-Power, 1911 or the CZ75? A hammer drop decocker like that seen on many Rugers, S&Ws? A Sig type decocker? An external safety or none? All are reliable and have their advocates. It comes down to what you want.

I also predict that within 5 years you'll have more than 2 guns.

I'll vote for the ruger

It's good to have an autoloader to work with so you can study its habits. I too have a revolver, but also I have a Ruger P89. Great gun for the money. Has never malfunctioned. But shooting a revolver, and shooting an auto are two different things. It's a good idea to have both. If you're a Ruger kind of guy, then get the P95.

I like my Springfield XD-9 a lot. Very easy gun to shoot, and hasnt jammed on me. Only about 500 round so far, 250 or so in an action pistol match. It's not bad in a high riding belt holster and loose T-shirt, for CC, but it's on the big side. The only small complaint I can think of is that the trigger pull is on the long side. I shot an action pistol match with it, and that is when I noticed the trigger pull. For target plinking and double taps, the pull had not bothered me. If I shot more matches with it I probably would get used to it.

The XD-9, and a .380 makarov are the only auto-pistols I own. I've never shot a SIG or Ruger auto pistol other than .22's, can't comment on those.

If I wanted one auto, I'd get a Beretta 92/96 (I did) or a Glock fullsize...

Now, personally, I don't think a doomsday scenario is likely enough to justify preparing for - either in terms of worry or money, so I don't. However, throwing that out, if there were just complete societal chaos/anarchy and extreme danger, I'd rather be holding a Mini-14 or an SKS than any handgun.

I am a revolver nut, having shot one for years in PPC and NRA Action Pistol. I have also competed with the various 1911 style pistols, P7M8, Sig 220, and Glock 17, 23, 35, and 21. I recently picked up a Beretta 92FS just for fun. The darn thing holds 16 rounds (15+1), is totally reliable, pre-ban hi-caps are available, and the darn thing is more accurate than my Les Baer. Honestly, if I had to own just one pistol (in 9mm) it would probably be the Beretta. - Ron Ankeny

I have to agree with Ron. I have several revolvers and semi-automatics in calibers from .22 to .45. I got the Beretta for my SHTF gun as it shoots good, ammo is cheap and it is used by our Military.

That means ammo and magazines will be available. The same for the AR-15 in my safe.

Do I think either of these choices is the BEST for the job? No, .45ACP and .308 are better in both cases. But, Berettas and AR's are what is in use so that's where I go.

Have fun in you choices...

But, Berettas and AR's are what is in use so that's where I go.

IMHO, I wouldn't look to the military as a benchmark for gear.

I would never choose ALICE packs for backpacking or BDU's as outdoor wear.

When selecting gear, the military has consideration (logistics and cost) that do not apply to private citizens.

Not to say that the 92FS or AR15 aren't good weapons; I own an AR15 myself. But, I'd be a tad more cautious about embracing military doctrine.

I think Mtnr357, answered his own question. If you can do it with your 357 revolver, why look for another sidearm...

Start saving a few months more for a rifle if you really want to round out your inventory. Crime bill has sunset; get yourself a quality AK if you don't want to spend too much money.

Just my .02 dollars.
