That is the factory configuration.

We don't have the restrictions on 14" barrels that you do.

14" = good to go. No tax stamp.

I took the Hp9-1 to the range today and put a box of winchester 2 3/4 #4's through it. No FT Feed or FTE's. It handled really good, nice balance. The recoil is not notably harder than an 18". Did some tests at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 yards. I wanted to see the pattern it would have whilst hunting. Standing in for grouse; Heineken cans  . The results:

10 yards

HP9-1 vs Sprite (movie)

Dead sprite

Yeah.. it starts to get really iffy after 20 yards.
This gun is great, I am really happy with it.

Thanks for the detailed thread. I am going to be ordering one of these myself as I have had great luck with all the other Norinco firearms I own. Great looking finish. Have you been able to chrono the loads? I`m curious to the velocity. Also, do you know what the choke restriction is? This is going to be my new grouse/trapping/ wounded black bear tracking gun.
Have you had the chance to try slugs yet? If so, how is the accuracy out to 30 yards?
Could I please implore you to pattern some 00 Buckshot loads at 10-40 yards and post the pics? I`m dying to get my hands on one of these. Handy in the extreme. Sorry for being so pushy in my quest for knowledge, but " I gots ta know".

BTW, I have worked with a shorty .410(12" bbl), and I found the trick for grouse is to use smaller shot (4 is too large). Believe it or not, #8 or #81/2
shot is perfect as the pattern density is much greater and the chance of connecting with the head/neck is much greater. Also, in the .410, the velocity was such that the breast did not have hardly any pellets in it as the lighter shot did not penetrate deep enough most of the time. You still won`t be taking any 40 yard grouse cleanly, but it will increase your 25 yard chances. best, cheapsk8

I have shot some slugs out of it; I've been about to consistantly hit a 2L bottle at 30 yards. Not too shabby. I'll try to runs some buck shot through it this weekend and I'll post some pics.

Thanks. That would be greatly appreciated. Take some #8 while your out at the range and do some work out at 25-30 yards. You will see the pattern density difference. I find a significant difference than either 71/2 or 6 out of the short bbls. I`m also an avid grouse hunter and hunt in extremely thick brush on my remote trapline, where the birds are left alone( i.e. close shots on running birds in thick brush). I prefer .22s, but it is hard to get a clear sight picture where I have been hunting lately.

# pellets/ oz

225-#6
135-#4
410-#8

Quite true but I don't have to ask permission to take my 18 inch gun out to use it and the cops can't come in to inspect my storage just because they want to.

nemesis,

Quite true of restricted weapons in Canada. But there is only a bbl length restriction on centerfire rifles.

Rimfire rifles and shotguns have NO RESTRICTIONS on bbl length provided the entire firearm is over 26". Centerfire rifles become restricted as soon as the bbl length drops below 18.5 inches.

So my .22 Marlin Papoose with the 16.5" bbl, and this Norinco shotgun with the 14" bbl are classed as a non-restricted weapons. They can be bought on the most basic firearms license (non-restricted), and can be taken from the house at any time, and brought hunting anywhere.

This is the only thing the stateside firearms owners have to be jealous about
Canadian firearms owners. Everything else, well.... I guess it could be worse.

how is it holding up? in that vid it looks like a nice gun.

I'm torn between two guns right now...
Mossberg Maverick 88 285 cdn locally
or the Norinco HP9 400 cdn locally

HOw much did you pay? any problems? is the trigger guard steel? I was looking at one and it felt solid...

Short barrled shotty have always made me tingle.

The closest I can come is a 18" SxS.

I've been thinking about of of their shotguns to combatize but have never kown anybody that had one to check out.

It is holding up good. No problems so far. The trigger guard is steel. I bought in from www.marstar.ca $386 shipped and taxes (only gst, as out of province)

I recently put a hogue overmolded stock on it. Feels great!

Still need to do some buckshot tests... I'll post 'em when I do.

At least now I know what Heineken is used for becuase it sure as hell aint fit for drinking.

I have bashed Canada in the past for the views of thier govt. and for the huge amount of America bashing by Canadians I have ran into but I'm glad to see Canada still has at least one or two decent gun owners left.

Nine, my Hp9-1 just came in today. I just wanted to let you know that I used your photos for another board I frequent, just because I was too lazy to take my own.

I have now found one canadian that I can say that I respect :D  . Sucks that you have stupid gun laws like you do. The short shottys are kinda cool tho.

14" barrels and the law...

cheapsk8,

you are close but not exactly correct WRT barrel length. The restriction is for any semi-automatic centre-fire, rifle or shotgun. Just try and purchase a 14" 11-87P (yes they do make them, but restricted to LE/mil) and see how far you get with your basic PAL...

I picked up an HP9-1 and put a 1-shot mag extension on it as well as a big-head safety and a fiber optic front sight - it kicks ass... BTW, where in NOnt are you, as I'm up here too...

Just FYI ;)
