Just getting into rifles - which one?

The Gunsite scout is a great all around rifle . You will enjoy it . It how ever will only shoot about 800yds accurately because of the lower velocity do to the shorter barrel . Still a great rifle enjoy:)

I think I've settled on the Ruger Gunsite Scout in 18 inch barrel:

IMO either make a mauser scout or by the real thing (a steyr) the ruger "scout" rifles I have handled are not in the same category as the original steyr model but you'll still need a good solid 22. If you go bolt action I'd buy a CZ of your liking. With a little work you could figure out how to put an EER optic on one of those.

The civilian M14 is an excellent rifle and the M1A ain't bad either.
Get one with a 22" barrel and learn how to shoot with iron sights.

Whats the difference between the civillian M14 and the M1A?

What models of Steyr would you recommend?

Oh they make a scout too huh, looks nice, built in stand too-that's fancy.

Yeah a lot more expensive., but it has a 22 inch barrel.

Tell me guys why go bolt action? Any advantages?

Start with a .22lr (even for long range shooting skills) and for 500 yard target, varmints, predators on up to deer look no farther than a decent .243 bolt gun. The Gunsite Scout looks cool if you're in to such things but does little if anything better than guns costing half as much. As for the Garand and M1A....... get one if you want, great history, but understand that a basic bolt gun is better for what you're talking about. Lighter, better handling and 9 times outta 10 more accurate all for less money.

The difference between M1A and M14 is that the M14 can go full auto, although only the Hulk can control it after the first shot.

First of all I would suggest a Savage 308 rifle. It is simply the best value for the money. Very accurate and if you get one with the Accutrigger they are superb.

If you want a detachable 10 round magazine you should look at the Savage 10 FCP-SR

The M1A is a product of Springfield Armory, Inc. It's built on a cast receiver and the old ones had some USGI parts.
The commercial M14s include LRB, SEI, Norinco & Poly Tech.
These 'premium' rifles usually include forged receivers and they are built with USGI, SEI or higher quality reproduction parts.

FWIW, the recoil of a full auto M14 or M1A can easily be tamed by adding SEI's USCG muzzle brake.
