Just called 911.......

As many of you know, I own and operate a coin and pawn shop. I am presently at the shop. About 10 min ago, a man and woman came in to ask if they could change into gorilla costumes in the shop.

I told them no and they proceeded to start anyway. I then picked up my 92FS and told them in no UNCERTAIN term to stop now and do not do it. So they left.

They started changing in the parking lot and I called 911 and told them I did not think it was an emergency but that I would feel more comfortable with a car in the area.

The police arrived in about 10 minutes. The Beretta was here all the time.

Anyone who thinks the police are the FIRST line of defense ought to try operating a jewelry store or pawn shop.

Take away guns and gorillas can run the world.

10 minutes? A robbery can be done and over and subject long gone in under 3...
7 minutes to get away...
Means the felon could be as far as 8.5 miles by the time the officer arrives and asks what the problem is.

And if there anything like NYC cops they'll wait 30 minutes before responing to be sure the perps have left the scene!

I'm glad that you're alright and everything worked out okay but I do have a question (and I've been wondering about this for a while now): what would you have done if after looking at the gun, they ignored you anyway? Would you have fired? Unless they were committing a crime and/or you were in fear of your life, I suspect that you would not have been legally justified in shooting. Again, I ask this for informational purposes only because several times I came very close to being in a similar situation.

Again, I'm glad that you're okay. Regards, FUD.

Hey on some days 911 is busy, or they even hang up on you.

One winter in college, where I worked security, on a day with very slippery roads. Cars were hiting each other and blocking intersections, etc. And then the phone lines on campus went down. Then someone started a fire in the building that the security office was in. I was not on campus that day myself, but other security officers ended up using some cell phones, that belonged to other students, to try calling 911. 911 was busy the whole time [because of all the car accidents]. Since they had evacuated the building they didn't have the direct number for the fire department.

BTW we didn't even get to carry pepper spray or batons officially at that job. And I never saw one LEO that responded to any of our, ie security, calls...even for assaults in progress.

IMO though the problem with police non repsonse times in that city, St.Paul MN, was simply not enough LEO's.

Glam...they didn't know how to use fire extinguishers?

Lavan....glad yer ok and it didn't escalate.

I call 911 for clean-up but worse-to-worse and I figger I aint got time for callin no one. :D

FUD. Been there before. Had they continued AGAINST my specific instructions to stop, the gun would have been raised to a full point and I would have activated the panic alarm.

From there, I would observe and begin giving instructions. At any sign of an overt AGGRESSIVE act TOWARDS me or the help, they would be shot.

Believe me, I will not ever shoot anyone without a reason, but reasons can develop in a hurry.

Welp.

I sure don't know what to think of this one.

Changing into gorilla suits? WTF? Not even FUD can come up with a story like that! :D

I have got to stop takin' cheap shots at ya FUD.. but I can't help myself! ;)

No disrespect, but...

"And if there anything like NYC cops they'll wait 30 minutes before responing to be sure the perps have left the scene!"

I am privileged to count among my closest friends a great number of NYPD's finest, both past and present. To blanket them with such a libelous statement is unfair and untrue. The many, many fine officers who carry the badge in NYC would be justly pi$$ed off with this garbage remark.

Not that this has anything but I am dying to know- what in the world were they changing into gorilla outfits for? If anyone tried to wear a mask you have to assume they are up to some sort of 'monkey business' and there are frequently ordinances against wearing masks in public for just that reason. I am still curious.

Maybe they intended to rob Lavan's shop and they wanted Lavan's permission to change into the gorilla suits and masks so he couldn't identify them??

This is not direclty pertinent (sp?), but along the same lines. My aunt and uncle live next to my family's farm. They dialed 911 three times to report a forest fire that was on the adjacent property and comming on to ours. Three times the 911 operator flat refused to even send someone to check it out. She stated it was a "controlled burn" and that it was under control - of course no one had checked but the operator was very confident about it even when she was told there were flames in the tops of the pine trees and the fire was headed toward the house.

I thought I had heard it all. Now I have heard it all!!!!!
Terrible response time for the 911 call.

Glad it turned out ok!

Well we, the security officers, were not supposed to use fire extinguishers. On another occasion the only student officer I would have counted on personally found a fire in a garbage bucket in one of the dorms and put it out. That officer got reamed by our boss [the boss was a former LEO].

Tatters: IMHO ten minutes is a good response time on a 911 call in general.

I don't see any problem whatsoever with a 10 min. response time for a call described as "not an emergency". I'd say that was a very good response time.

I'm also curious why they were changing into gorilla costumes. That's just weird if they didn't give any reason like they were going to a costume party or something. Now if you were in San Francisco, I'd say that's business as usual. :)

Lavan, I sympathize with you. When I was doing contract security a few years ago, I was called to one of the shops I patrolled. The girl behind the counter was petrified and told me that there were two guys with masks at the back of the store. She was the only other one there and new she was getting robbed. I sent her next door and snuck up on the "bandits". It was two kids who were always up at the shopping center. I reamed there butts out good for scaring her (and me) half to death. They were just being kids and had no idea that they would scare anyone. I hope thats all your gorillas were doing. Sounds to me like you did the right thing.

You get a call about gorilla suits that is not an emergency. You have other calls out there that are emergencies. You are lucky you have a response. If you want armed response - ask for it on an emergency basis.

Reality intervenes again.

My guess is that they were going to some kind of party or something nearby and didn't want to drive the whole way with the hot costumes on. You were probably close to their destination and they weren't very familiar with using a gas station bathroom for stuff like this.
